First layer calibration: nothing gets extruded

Hello everyone.

I have seen this thread https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/postid/401629/ but that seems to actually be about a filament loading problem.

My filament seems to load fine, the sample amount gets extruded. I can also print, albeit the quality is abysmal (probably due to missing first layer calibration). --> so I guess the extruder generally works fine.

However, whenever I try to do the first layer calibration routine the machine moves but no plastic gets extruded and nothing is printed.

  1. I'm somewhat at a loss here, please advise. Isn't 1st lay. cal. a built-in routine that should always work? Or is there anything I can tweak (like manually having to switch on extrusion)? Or is the extruder actually broken and just seems to work?

1st layer calibration on the Mk3, is an exercise that you need to complete, before attempting any prints, and it's located in the calibration menu on the LCD.

I don't like this method so I generally use a different method.

there are many alternative 1st layer calibration methods, and the best one for you, will be whichever method works best for you... (there is no absolute right method)

Try 'Life adjust Z - My Way' by Jeff Jordan'   (I remember it because if the spelling mistake Life = Live)

https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting/life-adjust-z-my-way/

there are gcode examples at the bottom of the first post, for use with a 0.4mm nozzle and different materials,

try that method, see if it helps you...

regards Joan
