Firmware Bug - Crash Detect will NOT turn off completely

Seems like a Firmware bug. On my MK3S, latest firmware, 3.8.1, I have 'Crash Detection' configured OFF, yet, I still am getting crash detection occurring! I've watched it happen, but have not been able to get a photo of the display saying it. The camera on my iPhone is too slow to start.

I successfully printed a mess of hospital face masks for St. Charles Hospital from PETG, using this printer, after I built it from a kit. It was working great, and all of a sudden, it turned unreliable.

From reading the support documents, it appears that the most common cause for false crash detections are from the X and Y axis being too loose. So, I tightened them as much as I could.

I took the back off the extruder, and shortened the X-axis belt as much as possible, and I've got the tightener screw as tight as I can get it. The first time I attempted to do this, the X-axis belt slipped in the teeth that are supposed to hold it. So, I wedged the belt against the teeth using cut off bits of cable ties as wedges. This time, it held in place as I rotated the X-axis motor into place.

The Y-axis tightener works pretty well. My print is probably usable, but it still has evidence of three restarts.

Not impressed with the X-axis tightener design.

If it's not too much work for you, you could print a new x-idler and upgrade the mk3. The bearings will fit better and the x-belt can be tightened more precisely:

x_idler

Karl:

Thank you very much for your kind reply.

Those parts look very much like the Zaribo X-axis parts? I was trying to print those parts with Crash Detect disabled when it detected a crash (for no reason I can see), and restarted the print, several times.

Grrrrr.

Pulled X-axis off printer in order to get the belt tighter. Putting it back together, somehow I managed to cross thread one of the Delrin nuts that lifts the X-axis for Z. It's really hosed now.

New parts on order from the Czech Republic...

Did you try to print in Stealth Mode? Crash detection is generally not active there. If hardware is ok (all axes run smoothly without any obstacles) and you always have errors with crash detection, try a factory reset (a master reset often has a healing effect) and maybe downgrade to FW 3.7.2 or reflash 3.8.1

It turned out that a couple of things were going on.

The first problem was that the x-axis timing belt was working loose from the retaining slots in the extruder, and I had not noticed. I tried wedging it into place with cut off ends of cable ties. It still pulled loose when I put it under tension. I cut a piece of GT2 timing belt from my first 3D printer, a gcreate gmax from their Kickstarter, and it is a little thicker than the belt that Prusa shipped. It is holding tension in the extruder great!

The second problem is that I had added a new Einsy cover with a 40mm fan. I used socket head cap screws to install the fan. Occasionally, the extruder cable bundle would catch on those socket head cap screws. Replacing them with domed head screws resolved that.

I printed another Einsy case that moves the fan to the aft edge of the Einsy case. Going to install that instead, and get the fan away from the extruder all together.

I am going to print the x-axis parts that you provided and try them out the next time I disassemble my printer
