Firmware 3.12.1 and SuperPinda?

Since I upgraded my MK3S+ to firmware version 3.12.1, the first layer with Overture PETG has gotten really problematic.

I’m having to adjust the first layer height up or down for almost every print.

It’s like the Pinda isn’t measuring reliably? Has anyone else run into that?

I also changed from from printing on smooth PEI to textured PEI about the same time

The textured sheet has a different thickness. and has its own Z height setting.. There are 3 sheets that the firmware stores, accessed by the LCD menu. Select another sheet, put on the textured and do another Z calibration. It will be about .3 different. Now the problem is if you forget to set back when you put the smooth on, it will dig into the smooth (menu set to rough, but smooth sheet on). Really there should be notches and an opto-sensor to automatically select the correct sheet. Maybe in MK4.

With firmware version 3.12.1, I did the factory full reset, then used the wizard to do full calibration with the textured sheet, and yes, I did select the textured sheet.

I've just backdated my MK3S+ to firmware version 3.11, did the full calibration (with the Wizard) with the textured PEI and have a successful print going right now.
I'm curious as to whether the software is wonky, or if my PINDA is wonky.

This isn't my first rodeo, and I've been using Pindas for a long time now. I've been printing with Prusa since the MK1. Rebuilt it into a MK2, rebuilt it into a MK2S, rebuilt it into a MK2.5S. Built my MK3 from a kit, rebuilt it as a MK3S+.

I've never had a Pinda equipped Prusa give such inconsistent first layers before. My MK3S was very repeatable and reliable at printing PETG before updating to firmware ver 3.12.1, and moving to the textured PEI sheet.

I don't remember the configuration wizard asking me whether or not I had the smooth or texture PEI before it started doing any of the calibration? Does it do that?

RE:

I think I first printed on the smooth sheet with firmware 3.12.1. I remember changing the sheet setting to textured, and doing the first layer calibration again for that sheet.

I have NOT done that with firmware 3.11. I did the factory reset, and ran the setup wizard with the textured PEI sheet installed.

No, it does ask..  The KB at Setup Steel Sheets tells how to set up multiple steel sheet profiles. You select the proper profile on the LCD by clicking the knob and scrolling down until you see the SHEET option. On that option, clicking the button will scroll thru the sheets you have set up. There should be two. I set mine to 'smooth1' and 'rough1'.  You select the appropriate one for the sheet you have installed and then use CALIBRATION to do a FIRST LAYER CAL. Now many also just print 1 layer squares and do a 'live z' change as they print. This is actually better. Print the squares, and as they are printing press the button until the Z setting appears, and tweak as needed. Sorry, you may know all this well.. I am not updating to 3.12.1. I turned off the nag screen. I've heard too many issues with it.. Maybe I'll do it at 3.12.5.. 🙂

Yes, I changed from the smooth sheet to the textured PEI sheet while running 3.12.1. I remember changing the sheet from smooth to textured, and running the first layer calibration again afterwards.

I'm now running firmware 3.11 on my MK3S+

Hmm. On my my MK3S+ running 3.11 firmware, the setup Wizard does not appear to have asked me which sheet was installed?
It thinks it has a smooth sheet installed...

The plastic end of my SuperPinda came tilted like this, but it worked fine with the smooth sheets and previous firmware

It does NOT ask. I had an error but could not edit.
