Filament stops Extruding, Gears skipping as motor tries to push filament

Hi,

I am not new to 3d printing, I have done a fair amount of it through my job. However my knowledge on 3d printing vernacular is not great, so I will try to explain the best I can, but if something I says doesn't make sense, please let me know.

Here's the basic issue. The print will start fine, will print fine for a while, and then at some point, its like the filament (PLA) gets jammed, or just flowing.

What results is the printer will still be moving in the X, Y, and Z axes, but the gears are slipping on the filament, and the gears strip the filament.

After this happens, the Filament (PLA) can be unloaded, usually without issue. And the Filament can be reloaded without issue. So I don't think that there is something jammed into that tube on the inside of the hot end.

I have tried different retraction settings, that was my thought as to what the issue was, I have tried tightening and loosening the screw on the left side of the printer head (its the one that holds that little door on the right side down and allows access to the gears that pull the filament.)

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

is the printer in an enclosure? or a warm location?
you could have heat creep!

if it's in an enclosure, try leaving the door open when you print

Hi Joan,

Yes printer is in a prusa box enclosure, to my knowledge it is functioning correctly.

I just looked up a picture of heat creep and the little air bubble at the end of the filament does look somewhat similar to what is happening to me.

I will look into this more.

Thanks for the suggestion!
