Filament run out sensor - blocked 3 out of 3 times!

I always turned off the filament sensor on my MK3 as it was, well rubbish(!).

When I upgraded to the mk3s I thought I'd reenable it given the improvements however, whilst the sensor now works well I've found that on all three occasions that I've let filament run out, it blocks the hotend.

It essentially leaves a piece of filament in the ptfe tube too far down for the gears to grip and it's flush with the top of the ptfe tube so I can just open the idler door and pull out with needle nosed pliers.

Anyone got some good ideas on how to get this out without complete dissassembly?

In addition, I wonder if it's be better if the firmware reversed out the filament when it detects it's run out to avoid getting it stuck?

Heat the nozzle, open the idler door, and use a stiff wire or 1.5 mm Allen wrench to push to push the filament down a bit. Then use a longer piece of filament to continue pushing the old filament out.  Once the filament is below the PTFE surface about 12 mm, you should be able to load filament normally.

are you using the MK3s or MMU2+MK3s sensor config? ( ball or idler door arm)

Yes Mk3s firmware, assume this includes relevant configs?

Tim, yes tried that first to no avail, it was pretty stuck. Ended up taking the nozzle off, heating to 260C and then tried again, this released enough of the the pressure to push it out, calibration now underway... Another print failed 12 hours in....!

the sensor should stop the extrusion as soon as the ball moves which should leave filament in the bondtech gears ( if you are using the ball driven  mk3s config)
