filament load and unload -stuck in this cycle just prior to printing

When I load a new file from the sd card, prusa does it's nine point calibration, then goes home, moves to right front corner , goes through the unload filament sequence ( whether there is already material loaded or not), then goes through the load sequence, properly extruding material, then goes back to the unload sequence and remains stuck repeating these operations. I have checked the filament sensor with a piece of paper and it changes the value from 0 to 1. I have the same result with many files that have successfully printed in the past. I have updated to firmware 3.12.0-.5672 and same result.

What else can I do? Any sugesstions

Temporarily disable the filament sensor (LCD menu) and try printing ... OK?  If so you may have dust or stringing interfering with your sensor so first try a blast of compressed air or in extremis disassemble, clean and rebuild.

Certainly feels like a filament sensor issue.

Disabling the filament sensor is a great workaround and lets me continue printing. I have had the filament sensor out to do the paper test and it appears to be clean.  Can I clean this with alcohol and a swab? are there other areas besides the sensor itself that may need cleaning?

Thanks for your first reply it was spot on correct and very helpful.

You now know where to look but what you'll find is anybody's guess...

Start simple, debris, dust, dirt, work though jammed, worn or broken mechanical parts and end by tracing back the electronics.
