Filament change before ironing

Is it possible to add a filament change mid-layer so that the ironed surfaces are a different color?

In the attached photo, I would like the angled fins to be printed in the same colors as the rest of the tail section. Then, I would like to do the ironing in a different color. Finally, returning to the original color for the rest of the print.

Begin layer w/ color X => Switch to Y for ironing => Switch to X for next layer

I know how to change filament at layer height X, but I'm not sure if I can do what I described.

RE: Filament change before ironing

I suspect ironing in a different colour would look horrible. When ironing, the high points of the previous layer are remelted and the low parts are filled by a combination of new filament and remelted. At least, that how I think it works, happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.
