Filament backing up and preventing extrusion
Hello, hoping for some help on this one.
I've been printing for a couple years now, and have recently been getting an issue where after 1-3 hours of printing, the end of the filament is getting enlarged (like it is getting backup melt onto itself) eventually jamming the nozzle and preventing printing. I can remove the filament, clip off the end and get it going again, but it just keeps happening. I've tried replacing the nozzle, replacing the hot end, checking the feed gearing (was fine), and doing a bunch of adjustments... from altering temperatures to try to get the flow better, to reducing the flow speed, and changing the Z adjustments to make sure the nozzle isn't too close to the bed. I'm completely out of ideas at this point, and wonder if anyone has any advice. I am using Prusament, and haven't ever had this problem before.

I did not have this specific issue but each time I had a filament related problem it was due to a new product. Did you switch brand or even color in the same brand recently ?

I've used the Prusa filament quite a few times before, but not this color.

If you are using the Prusa filament that's probably not the issue but I would try with a new spool just to rule out any trouble with this particular filament.
Even inside the same brand I have seen notable difference with different color. Currently using Esun and some color have filament issue.

Is this Prusament PLA or PETg, ASA, PC ?.
That tip isn't great but I wouldn't expect it to cause jams ... Have you tried a cold pull in case there is some other partial clog triggering the backup?

I have cleaned out the nozzle with some acetone and needles to check for it to be clear, along with swapping to a new nozzle. Could be something in the system, though, and I'll try the cold pull in the next couple of days to see if that works at all. Never hurts to try 🙂

Well, I didn't see anything change with color or dirt, but there was an odd bend in the filament, right around where it would enter the heater block. I'm going to try disassembling the hot end completely, then reassemble it. Might be that there was a gap somewhere?
Check you have a spare ptfe tube before you strip it down.

Okay, what I was able to do was get the original hot end actually cleared out (it had about half an inch of plastic jammed in the line so I had thought buying a new one would be easier) and rebuilt. I put in a new PTFE tube in, I had ordered 2 with the new kit just to be safe, and it's been printing just fine for longer than the new one was. Hopefully that fixed it... might have been a problem with the heater block or some connection somewhere. Fingers crossed it's good to go again. Thanks for all the suggestions!
