I just cut a shim out of some scrap plastic sheet 0.8mm thick. It's been working ever since!

I liked the "line up to haze the new guy" comment. It's fun to do when someone posts a thread asking for help then leads with "Nothing is broken and it all works perfectly, but my prints are failing..."

Just installer the spacer, this could be easily done without dissambling too much of the Extruder.
If the cover doesn´t fit anymore, you can print the new cover.

I’ve taken up too many new hobbies over the years to know that I’ll probably be full of it when I open my mouth. 🙂 And, in those other hobbies, I’ve seen exactly that same dynamic. I think it roughly translates to ‘I did this exactly the way the Internet told me, so nothing is wrong. And I can tell, because I get the same result the Internet got, so clearly it’s fine.’
@john-h57... I’ll line up behind everyone else who recommends trying the shim first. You literally only need to remove the top cap to get to the sensor. Getting to the lever arm is a lot more work.

I have a full and complete Mk3 to Mk3s upgrade kit from Prusa: still sitting in a box for well more than the past year. I will wait for the design to be complete before installing it. Though pretty sure none of the components I have will be part of the final DC BOM for the printer. Well, maybe the IR sensor board and cable will be applicable.

Chiming in: I have a Mk3 from early 2018 with R2 parts and am also not inclined to upgrade.
- IMO, Prusa caved on some issues (e.g. the filament sensor) and rather than convincing people to clean and maintain the original design, cobbled together the current solution. I hit mine with compressed air regularly and with the exception of a few shiny or clear filaments, find it works well.
- Similarly, I'm not impressed with the new PINDA arrangement, although it has been improved since the R3 design. A lot of the cooling issues it was intended to address were user error IMO.
I've also got a box with the Mk3s upgrade parts in my closet and am not likely to upgrade anytime soon.

Funnily enough I'm also with Bob and Tim on this. Got a MK3 and only filament I had trouble with was transparent petg. Since then I have rebuilt my extruder anyway with a Bunny & Butterworth geared setup and that uses a small bearing between the filament and sensor so now it always reads moving metal so no more issues with any filament.
I didn't do the extruder rebuild because of that, it was more a side benefit of having the geared extruder. Another benefit is that now my extruder stepper is completely decoupled from the filament feed so the heat cant travel to the filament, means I can print pla and have my enclosure closed.

Thanks both for the suggestions. I will give this a shot and try it out. I used to be able to get my sensor to work by repeatedly pushing and removing the filament quickly until it finally registered that it was ready to load it. But lately it's not doing that at all so I had to turn the sensor off just so I could load filament.
I'm working on another thread since the bigger problem I'm having now is that I can't get my PETG dialed in to print cleanly. My PLA is printing pretty good (not perfect), but usable for what I do. But my PETG just gets a lot a blobs on the nozzle area that occasionally leave droppings on the work which then cause me problems. I didn't have these problems before I converted to MK3S, so I am like the others, that I kind of wish I hadn't upgraded either.
