RE: Fan speed

Do you mean in the slicer or from the printers LCD ?

The answer to both is yes 🙂  During a print or even before you can set the fan speed using the menu's on the printer.  This is useful if you want to fine tune it during printing.

During Gcode generation using Prusa Slicer (or others) you can set the fan speed used.  The settings are located in the Filament Settings tab under Cooling.  You have to have expert mode enabled though to see them though.

@john-g66

In Prusa Slicer there are options under filament settings, cooling, to vary fan speed.

whilst a print is running, there is an option on the LCD Menu, under 'Settings', for 'Fan' speed   (0 to 255) 255 is full speed, very low speeds may not cause the fan to start spinning!

Hi John, are you using the basic user configuration?

Try Intermediate or advanced!

@john-g66

As I mentioned you have to be in expert mode to see them as they are red coded so advanced is needed to see the settings.

I'm not at my printer now so cant work through the lcd steps but follow Joan's instructions.

RE: Fan speed

hi everyone , how can i adjust fan speed layer by layer in prusa slicer. for example firstlayer (off) - 2.Layer (%20)- 5.layer (%50)..... because if fan speed starting with %100 some prints fail with thermal runaway. heater cant catch target tempature. i make this adjustment manuel on printer but i neeed slicer based settings.thanks for your help.

RE: Fan speed

The fan can be turned off for the first N layers in PrusaSlicer under cooling. Not sure if it can be controlled layer by layer for the rest of the print.

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

RE: Fan speed

There’s no ‘normal’ way to do that in Prusa slicer. You are down to adding some form of custom gcode, either in the printer settings or else where.

the 2.2.0 alpha version available on github has the ability to add custom gcode in at user designated layers, it’s accessed like the colour change option but instead of defining a filament change the user also has the option to insert custom gcode. You could use that to add specific fan values from 0-255 at whatever height you wanted.

If you have problems with thermal runaway, you can solve that problem by mounting a silicone sock on the hot end, or you can switch to another fan shroud.

@rhdreambox

That depends on the cause of the thermal runaway.  Usually, runaway is too hot not too cool.

Thermal runaway occurs in situations where an increase in temperature changes the conditions in a way that causes a further increase in temperature, often leading to a destructive result. It is a kind of uncontrolled positive feedback.

A sock is going to make it more toasty.

My tip depends on my own experience. When I switched to a more powerful front fan, I came across this problem.
A silicone sock eliminated the problem.
I have also noticed that there are some problem with the MK3S where the nozzle blows more uncontrolled, and then it helps with a nozzle that directs the air more precisely.

Nice. Great to see that you've had time to convert the mounting of your fan shroud to the MK3S extruder. I hope your kitchen is finished. 🙂

@sembazuru
You have a good memory! Yes, the kitchen is finished, and now I sit and roll my thumbs and do not know what to do next 😉
Or, should I make a new nozzle for my Bondtech extruder maybe?

RE: Fan speed

Hmmm... Looks like I may have to print out a new extrusion motor indicator. The fan mounting arm may interfere with the rotation of my current extrusion motor indicator. Bummer (but not a deal breaker). I'll know more once I actually print the new fan shroud.

If you are curious, you can see a picture of my extrusion motor indicator in the in-use pictures here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3953252 (The actual indicator was from this collection: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2772718 )

I am sorry that I did not take into account those using engine indicators 😢
I've also made mine a little smaller.
