Extrusion failure *ONLY* within confined X-Y range

TLDR: PETG prints suffering extruder failures consistently within a finite X-Y "box" and working as intended outside of that box. WTFH?!

I've seen issues *mostly* like mine–but none with consistent extrusion failure over a specific X-Y range only! Searched for hours. Tinkered for several more. I'm at wits end. And I've only had the printer for a couple of months.

I tried the same print, several times last night. In between I tried:Checking the extruder pulley to ensure that it was situated properlyTightening the extruder springChecking the motor/gears for clogs*Nearly* identical results, each time. The same approximate X range over an oddly finite Y range consistently resulted in extruder "clicks" followed by the absence of PETG being extruded.

In between, I tried first layer calibration several times. The first two X lines of the first layer calibration print would experience extruder stutters. After that, at greater Y ranges, no stutters. Consistently! Why, then, would the extruder fail, over two different gcodes (the one above as well as first layer calibrations), consistently, over multiple prints.

I believe that I correctly followed the instructions on this page to no avail.
