Extruder stepper getting hot, strange noise?

Hi,

My MK3 has been working well up until about 1 day ago. For my most recent print(s) I noticed a new noise and that my extruder stepper motor was very warm after the printing completed. The print appears to be fine, but I have never noticed the stepper motor getting hot before.

I'm running the latest firmware 3.1.3.

Any ideas on what might be wrong or how to diagnose this issue?

Thanks,
-Jim

Depending on what your infill speed is set to, and the size of your object... Your extruder can get TOASTY.

I keep my infill at 125mm/s (default is 200!!!)

Sometimes when doing infill VERY fast, the nozzle "hops" over the "earlier" infill lines on the layer. I've never experienced an issue from this. (can can hear these "hops")

As long as your extruder motor is BELOW 75c, I wouldn't worry too much. The motor is rated at 110c or 120c. I can't recall... Either way... The motor is safe, at temps hot enough to get PLA sagging... 😉

PS: 75c is a VERY specific temp I say, becuase at 70-80c, you can start to get the PETG "soft" and this would be bad.

I run a custom extruder, and I've had it up to 65c, and have NOT had any issues with the generic 11$/kg cheap PLA filament I use. (Planning on getting some high end HTPLA for the part the motor mounts to)

Hi, I'm Sean. I used to work on CNC machines.
I try to not make mistakes, but the decision is YOURS.
Please feel free to donate to my filament/maintance fund.
