EMI issues stopping print

Hi everyone!

Not quite sure if I should post this here, over over at the OctoPi forums.

I have recently had some printing issues where prints initiated from OctoPi stops, this has happened thrice now over the last couple of days.
In the OctoPI serial logs I see some garbage just before it stops printing. Sometimes OctoPi tries to reconnect, sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it fails and then the print fails.

An example of garbage from the logs can be:

| Recv: ok T:214.9 /215.0 B:55.1 /55.0 T:2q4.9 /215.0 :&&j2.0 A:41.6
| Send: N476 G1 X88.530 Y81.895 E3.1525*92
| Recv: Error:No Line Number with checksum, Last Line: 475

Im not quite sure if this is what the printer sends, or if this is what the rPI (3 b+) perceives, hence me posting here first.

I was playing around with grounding some other electronic (HAM) equipment to my radiator pipes two-three meters away from the printer, generating some sparks and for sure a lot of EMI at the same time as my last crash.

Do you guys have any helpful tips as how I can proceed with debugging this? Would it be feasible to clad the Einsy case and rpi case in alu foil?

I think the clue is here. A tip (helpful or not) would be to not do this bit 😆

That was only one of at least three failures the last days 🙂

The WiFi signal is at -65 dBm where the pi is placed now, shouldnt really be enough to affect the serial connection.

Not quite sure why restarting my router should do anything since the pi communicates with the printer over serial.

Is there any negative consequences by using USB from the rpi rather than serial?

Re: EMI issues stopping print

Is this Pi connected to the Einsy by the GPIO pins or USB? If USB, try a different cable as some are more susceptlible to EMI than others.

Its connected by the GPIO pins. I guess I should try using the supplied USB instead?

For that part, probably nothing. But how do you connect to the Pi? Presumably via a router or switch? All possibilities are worth looking at when you are troubleshooting.

But if you haven't checked (swapped as per above) the most obvious which would be the connection between the pi and printer then that is the more likely culprit for sure.
