Cracked Extruder Body - Can I Save It?

Hello,

I managed to crack the extruder body near the PINDA probe mount while adjusting it. My PINDA probe has been askew for quite some time (maybe it came cracked), but it is worse now. Now the PINDA probe is held askew such that it won't recognize the print bed underneath.

My question is: Can I glue this back together? What kind of glue would work best with the plastic, and will it survive being near the hot end? I really would prefer to not have to reinstall the hot end if I can avoid it. I have Gorilla Epoxy, E600, and several brands of super glue.

You can temporarily glue it to get you printing but you are going to have to reprint that part soon.  Might try one of the modified parts with better pinda holder to stop it happening in the future.

I glued mine with JB Weld and used it the next day to print out a replacement.

Nice thing about our printers. If you can make a temporary patch - it can print it's own replacement parts.

But don't confuse a glue job with a fix. Print that replacement. Not in PLA - something with a little more heat resistance.

True - PETG or PETG with CF.

Ok. I am applying epoxy now.

It there a extruder body that y'all have found to be the best? Is there a link? I have been having other issues, so lets hope that I can actually manage to print the whole thing.

I would just print the specific part you need now. Get that all squared away.

At your leisure - look into extruder options. I am partial to the Bear Short Ears version.

Skelestruder is also highly thought of.

And along with those go the other X Axis enhancements... Never ends.

I‘ve tried and used both Skelestruder and BNBSX (my current extruder) on the mk3s. Both have massive advantages over the stock extruder in my opinion. There are other options available like the BMG (commercially available, easy swap but not cheap) for the less faint of heart.

If you change to another extruder go for a geared one - it‘s a worthy improvement!

Printing and building Skelestruder or BNBSX looks like a daunting and complex task but it really isn‘t once you have started. The key is being prepared and having all necessary parts printed or bought (bearings, etc) upfront. You don‘t want to disassemble your printer just to discover you forgot to print one tiny but crucial part or forgot to order a bearing.... Check and recheck several times reading the whole assembly documentation before - there are sometimes hints to optional parts that make assembly easier in the docs that are not in the BOM.

Well, I managed to glue the extruder body well enough to be able to print again.

I'm not ambitious enough at the moment to actually replace the hot end entirely. I mean, is there a STL file to replace my broken extruder body that is better than the "stock" one? If there have been minor improvements, I may as well print that one.

It is, Prusa provides an "reinforced" version to download from Prusa Github -> BOTH parts with description "Reinforced fin and PINDA holder".

Print the one you glued first, the other afterwards. Both original parts suffer from the heat - if one is damaged already and the other not yet it is only a question of time usually so it does not make sense to replace only the already damaged one.

I printed these.  I will test them and see if it fixes the melting issue.
