Constant Jamming

Friends,

I'll explain my issue, and then go on a rant as opposed to the opposite way around. With PLA, I frequently (every 2nd to 3rd print) find that a jam will occur in the hotend, usually around the heatbreak. With PETG or other high temp filaments (CF, Nylon, PC, ABS, ASA, etc) this traditionally hasn't been a problem, although I haven't tried most of them since moving from the MK3 to the MK3s, as I can't seem to get PLA printing with consistency. To remedy this, I removed all of the sides from my enclosure, assembled, and installed an extruder stepper fan shroud ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2975582 ). Today, the same thing (presumably, I haven't had time to investigate yet) happened with PETG, and it appears that the lower PFTE tube got sucked down into the heatsink.

I guess I'm asking this. Do I move back to the MK3, or do I try to continue to power through the problems with the MK3s?

Rant:

Folks at Prusa, this is starting to get immensely frustrating. It is happening repeatedly, and I'm quite displeased. On MK3 hardware, it happened maybe once. My experience with the MK3s upgrade started on the wrong foot in the first place with upgrade parts not printing with correct dimensions (I'm willing to admit that this was likely a printing flaw on my part, not sure how, but I'd suspect that to be the case), from there, once I ordered printed parts from Prusa, it's been nothing but trouble. Jam after jam, on an extruder assembly that's frankly very damned overly complex and difficult to disassemble and reassemble. This just sucks and it's gotten old.

Hello Eric,

Do you realise that this is largely a Peer to Peer forum, and Prusa rarely trawl through here.

Was there any improvement with PLA, when you took the sides out of the enclosure and fitted the Extruder motor shroud?

do you use the default 0.8mm Retraction?

have you considered reducing retraction to say 0.4mm for PLA?

regards Joan

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

@joantabb

My apologies on the rant. I'm frustrated and I am trying to get past this so that I can finish making PPE for my local hospital.

There was no improvement after using the fan shroud and removing the enclosure sides. Even PETG jams, with the shroud on and enclosure sides removed. All filaments jam. ABS and ASA are the same.

Yes, I am using .8mm retraction distance with PETG. Retraction speed of 35mm/s. With PLA, I use .4mm retraction distance because of this issue. Still jams, just takes 6-8 prints rather than 2-3 prints to jam. I use a high temp nozzle because of the aggressive filaments that I print with.
