Can’t upgrade firmware beyond 3.9.3 using Macbook

Mk3S+ using a MacBook Air 2014, Mac OS 11.7.2, Prusa Slicer 2.5.0. I can successfully flash new firmware to the printer but for 3.10x and  3.11 the printer display will not advance beyond the welcome screen. Rebooting multiple times hasn’t helped. Can re-flash to 3.9.3 and print without difficulty. I’ve even tried flashing from from the embedded Windows virtual machine (flash failed by that method). Looking for suggestions ( that don’t involve a new laptop).

If you can flash firmware with your setup then it will be nothing to do with your laptop. It will be the einsy board I think. I seem to vaguely recall there were issues around some boards, check the mk3 firmware GitHub issues both open and closed.

Just to be clear, the newer firmware will flash and the progress bar in Prusa Slicer says complete and no problems but when the printer reboots it won’t advance past the Welcome screen.

are you pressing the LCD Knob, or the X Button beneath it?

the X button is a reset.

From what I can gather on GitHub it’s the data in the eeprom that doesn’t get updated correctly and so it doesn’t work when flashed and can’t proceed.

Pushing all the buttons at one time or another. I can reload 3.9.3 and everything works fine, can print, just can’t update beyond that. Every time I go to print the LCD says I should update, but will disappear as the print begins.

More info for what it’s worth. Purchased the Mk3 in 2018, upgraded to the Mk3S in 2019. Do not have the Mk3S+. As I look at the firmware downloads, there’s a difference in that the more recent firmwares include Mk3S and Mk3S+.Not sure if that’s part of the problem. When done with printing I’ll take a video.

That's a pretty old MacBook using an old OS. The OS is now up to 13.1. You might try upgrading the OS to the latest 13.1.

Jus a thought.

Thanks for all the suggestions. As to the MacBook, it loads the 3.9.3 fine. The last compatible OS is 11.7 for this MacBook.

I think I’ve tried all the permutations. I’ve flashed Mk3 ( not S) for 3.10.1 and 3.11 with the same results as with the hex for Mk3S/Mk3S+( nothing progresses past the Prusa Welcome Screen) , but can flash 3.93 without any trouble, and can print just fine. It may be the einsy board as suggested. When I reviewed the GitHub link the problems are very different than what I’m seeing on the LCD screen which looks normal but doesn’t progress.

I’ve also compared  the logs from the flash of 3.9.3 and 3.10.1 and they look the same except for the version being flashed and the number or bytes transferred.

Maybe I should just accept that I can print successfully. The alternative would be to replace the Einsy card.

Hello, Hello. I gave the reset a try. Afterwards I could see the status screen after flashing 10.1 ( which had not happened before) but could not advance beyond that. Re-flashed with 9.3.1 and everything works. Were you saying press the reset button on top of the Einsy and THEN do a factory reset?  Not sure of the purpose of the reset button vs the factory reset using the control panel.

I do appreciate all the help so far.

Gave that a try, I think. Held the Einsy button down and restarted but it seemed no different than pressing the “X” reset button on the console. I did do a factory reset afterwards and got no further but thankfully can still print using 3.9.3. It’s aggravating to see the “Upgrade to 10.1” message every time I print but for nowI can still print without the firmware update. For what it’s worth I’m upgrading to Mk3S+, though I can’t see how that will make any difference. I’m resistant to replacing the Eisnsy board.
