Can't remove nozzle on mk3

I recently ordered an E3D v6 .8mm nozzle off of Amazon hoping to be able to print much faster. When I reviewed how to change it out it seemed pretty straightforward. I heated the nozzle to 285C. I had no problem loosening the heater block slightly, but when I tried using the 7mm socket, the nozzle wouldn't budge with reasonable force. I don't want to break anything so I decided to stop and ask for help. I'm pretty frustrated because I did exactly as the instructions said, used all the right tools, and all I was able to do was put a bunch of scratches in the heater block.

ALSO: I tried tightening the heater block again so I could print again if I wanted, but I can't seem to get it tight without it being crooked and pinching the wires.

Thanks,
Please help.

Re: Can't remove nozzle on mk3

maybe try tightening first (1/8 of a turn kinda thing). just to get it moving. then go loosen. I do mine around 250, and the first few times i had some tough ones. just be careful. I would worry too much about scratches in the heater block. just worry about not clipping the small temp wires. and face Prague while loosening 😀

I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

I use this tool for swapping nozzles, works as a charm.

Thanks for replying. I did try to rotate the nozzle in both directions, but I got no movement whatsoever.

That torque wrench seems pretty cool and I plan on printing that right as soon as I can get my heater block thightened down again.

Thanks for the replies!

Re: Can't remove nozzle on mk3

I had the same problem originally. Had to heat up the nozzle and leave it for awhile (15+ minutes) and it loosened up. I used a regular 7 mm wrench along with a wrench holding the block to apply some force and, while it originally scared me, it came right off. It was just a lot of plastic holding the original nozzle in place. Once I got the original nozzle off, they have all been a breeze from then on.

I will also say that I do not loosen the heater block first. I've probably changed my nozzle 20 times now and it hasn't caused any issue. So long as you are holding it solidly with the other wrench you should be fine. There was a lot of debate online on how this should be done. I know that Prusa recommends it, but several other knowledgeable people basically said that every time you move the heater block you risk damaging it so leave it alone. Again, I speak from my own personal experience, so do what you feel is best. For all I know I'm going to break the thing on the next change.

I also use the same printed torque wrench. It works beautifully, and I think partially because it DOESN'T over tighten the new nozzle. I will warn you that on that original nozzle that wouldn't come off, I tried using the printed torque wrench and snapped it in half. I ended up printing a new one and absolutely love it. I think the original nozzle on mine was just on too tight.

So I got the heater block tightened by removing the fans and front cover. Then I just rotated the entire hotend and I was able to straighten the block out. I am printing the torque wrench now, and plan to use the method of leaving it heated for a while next time. Thanks for the help.

I recommend good never seize and a real torque screwdriver with a 7mm socket and metric hex drivers

https://smile.amazon.com/PANOVOS-Driver-Metric-Socket-Wrench/dp/B01J3O4RYS/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1539314147&sr=8-8&keywords=metric+hex+bit+set+with+1%2F4%22+hex+shank

Who ever is assembling these hot ends must have gorilla strength.... took me a long time to get the nozzle off the first time I changed it but now with never size ( Locktite stick type) and proper snugging it up at 160 it is easy to make changes.

Ok, leaving it heated up for 15 minutes worked perfectly. Thanks for your help!
