Brim Separation Gap Precision ?

I'm trying to find the sweet spot between a brim that is easy to use and one that sticks well enough to keep parts from detaching from the sheet.

I have my brim separation gap set to 0.5 mm (which doesn't seem to reflect the actual gap, by the way -- a matter of accuracy).

What is the precision of the steps of adjustment in this setting? 0.05 mm? 0.01 mm? The diameter of the nozzle?

Are these very small or narrow parts?

No, the seperation is calculated from the line the nozzle follows but if you are squishing your first layer more or less the filament spread will vary the measured result.

What is the precision of the steps of adjustment in this setting? 0.05 mm? 0.01 mm? The diameter of the nozzle?

As a very rough guide begin by assuming half a nozzle diameter as your repeatable value, you can get finer but that is a matter of specific calibration.

I don't understand why a brim wouldn't be 0 separation. If its not touching it's just a multi line skirt. I'm sure there's a reason but I just don't see it.

The brim gap is to account for first layer squish.  It allows you to tune how well attached it is to the part.  That's why its adjustable.
