Blue Screen of Death - Printing Freezes

New build, and new to printing. My first 6 or so prints went perfectly. on the last 2 prints the job got part way in and just froze, that is stopped all movement. The LCD display didn't change. This happened 4 times on the last print ( https://www.printables.com/model/67509-filament-cutter-45deg/files). I found that if I turned off the power and powered back up the print would recover and resume printing. No errors are recorded except me turning off the power.

How do I troubleshoot from here?

Best Answer by Diem:

it froze in position.

That's most likely to be a corrupt or incomplete gcode file or it could be a dirty or damaged SD card connector pin.

I would start by disconnecting power and checking all electrical connections, starting with the power supply and ribbon cables and checking at each end.

Unplug each connector in turn and reinsert snugly. You may have a loose connection somewhere.

Cheers

Did it freeze in printing position or did it back off a fraction before stopping?

I did try reconnecting all plugs. I've only had time for a short print (30 minute) today and it ran fine. But that's not enough time to declare it solved.

I Started a new long print (25 hours). It froze after about 20 minutes.

I exported the g-Code to a different SD card and started the print over. It's been printing for 24 hours without fail.

Must be something wrong with the card. All failures have been printing from that one card.

Does the printer read from the card continuously throughout the print or does it read the entire file at the beginning and store in an internal memory?

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions.

It's a continuous read process.  Bad (modern) SD cards are relatively uncommon, sometimes a sticker on the back of the card to thicken it in the slot and firm up the pin contact is enough.

I’ve reformatted the card and will try it again. Perhaps the card socket has a weak contact. I’ll check for that.

I tried a new print from the problematic SD card. It ran for about 10 minutes and froze as before. I haven't checked the cardholder contacts yet.

But I did learn something about the resume after a power loss feature. When the print froze I shut off the power switch. I then loaded the g-code on another SD card which already contained some other files. Upon powering on, the MK3s+ found the correct file and allowed me to resume the print. Have to admit that I was surprised.
