Bioprinter hack - firmware update?

Hi everyone,

I am a biologist and 3D printer noob. I ordered a Prusa i3 to make this bioprinter: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2468067218300877 . I've assembled the kit - which is awesome by the way, the instructions are excellent and it is brilliantly engineered, and am gearing up to mod it as in that paper if we are allowed back into the lab in the next couple of weeks.

My question is about the firmware - the authors provide an edited version of the firmware which is compatible with their Composer software and the new mechanical press I will hopefully install without breaking anything. Since the publication and release of this firmware, the Prusa firmware and Slicr have been updated quite a lot... so my question is am I better off just using the firmware they have provided, or trying to reproduce the edits they have done but in the latest firmware released by Prusa.

Thanks a lot for your help - any other suggestions re this build are also very welcome =)

RE: Bioprinter hack - firmware update?

May I ask you ho much experience do you have in 3D printing and programming?

As far as I see from the article, they require HW and Firmware changes as well and doing them you must understand them.

I would recommend to contact the authors of the article to get help and what is most essentional a further support.

Some of the changes are cosmetical - the printer name, some you have to understand 3D printing like inverting the E0 extruder.

So when you are beginner, there is a long path in front of you.

even an old man can learn new things 🙂
Standard I3 mk3s, MMU2S, Prusa Enclosure, Fusion 360, PrusaSlicer, Windows 10

Hi Zoltan - thanks for the reply. Fairly little, I have put together the i3 and have printed a few bits of kit for my experiments. I have some experience with python for data science, but I will be the first to admit it is all fairly minimal.

Thanks for the suggestion - I will reach out and see what they say. I know enough to understand what changes they have implemented and why, but that's about it!
