Autoload filament question
I've printed about 30 objects, so far. Each has been a single type or color of filament. I've used "Unload filament" successfully to remove filament. However, when I insert the new filament into the Extruder, nothing happens. I have to use "Settings | Move Axis | Extruder" to have the Extruder consume filament (expelling the remainder of the previous filament and then expelling some of the new filament.) Is this expected behavior?
RE: Autoload filament question
When I unload filament and then insert more, it will auto load. Perhaps your filament sensor is not working propely? Try going into the support menu on the printer to check the values reported from the printer for the filment sensor and insert/remove the filament from the top. It should hopefully register? Or not in your case... and then at least you have found the problem.
RE: Autoload filament question
Thank you for the reply. I did some troubleshooting. I removed the filament and the Sensor still reports "1". I removed the access door on the extruder head and removed the screw holding the IR Filament Sensor board in place. With the IR Filament Sensor board hanging in space, I turned on the printer and the Sensor reported "0". I inserted a piece of paper in the optical path and the Sensor reports "1".
I put the IR Filament Sensor board back into position on the extruder head and the Sensor reported "1". There's something protruding into the cavity the IR Filament Sensor board fits in. I'm assuming that is fooling the sensor. I'll check additional troubleshooting links but I suspect I'll have to tear down the head, at least to some extent, to fix this. I did buy it as a kit, so I have familiarity with the steps.
RE: Autoload filament question
Check that the magnets are the right way around, so they push each other away... which pushes the small arm out of the filament sensors path.
When filament is pushed in the top, it should push the small metal ball which should then push the magnets together. Removing the filament should mean the magnets are free to push each other away from each other and move the arm back out the filament sensor path.
RE: Autoload filament question
Once again, thank you for the reply. I will check that as I work to rebuild the extruder head. Despite this issue, my I3 MK3S produces great results. I've built accessories for the printer, like tool trays and a hex wrench organizer. I also added a "windmill" decoration for the extruder motor to indicate movement and direction. My family has been impressed by the quality of the prints.
