Another Print Pause problem
I have seen others having print pause problems, I thought I would start a fresh thread for this one.
So, I am printing my brain, full size from a MRI and I hope to have something to show you if it ever finishes. (Over 36 hours to go on this piece)
My problem is that the Hatchbox silk silver and some supports from Meshmixer are giving some problems with strings. Some strings appear from nowhere, others are from weak supports that bend below the print level. The brain print is full size, hollow, and has many surfaces and a lot of overhangs and supports.
Anyway, when I was printing the lower half of the brain, I had 2 head crashes that reset nicely after I cleaned the print goo from the head and top print layer.
I am 10 hours into printing the top of the brain now and I found a front to back shift in the print of about 1/4mm from overnight. There were more supports toppled and strings going nowhere. The heater block was accumulating goo so I wanted to stop and clean it.
I am using firmware 3.4.1 on my MK3. I hit the pause button and the head moved up and I cleaned it and removed junk from the model.
I hit resume print and although the display said "HEATING" the head temp was going down, I waited over 10 min and the temp stabilized below 50 and the print did not attempt to resume.
I hit resume printing again, still nothing, so I hit preheat for PLA and the head temp started climbing to 215.
When it hit 215 (Which is higher than the 195 deg. temp I preset in my gcode for Hatchbox PLA), the print resumed.
Like others have noticed, it started to print above the current layer sending silly string all over the place.
Eventually it came back to the proper height and continued printing, so far it is still printing.
Problems:
1) Resume Print continues to drop the head temp to 0
2) Resume Print does not attempt to reheat the head.
3) Hitting Preheat (for PLA) sets the temp to 215 but when the print resumes, it never returns to the setting in the gcode.
4) When the print resumes, it spews string above the current print layer before moving the head to the print layer.

I hear after the pause, hitting pre heat helps. this issue has effected at least one of my maracas. pause used to work perfect every time. I think hitting filament change is safer. but I havent done the manual mmu stuff for awhile.
I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

Are you SURE all the problems are actually problems with the printer and NOT an accurate reproduction of your brain?

Yes, I even had the resume printing above the print. Then lower. It roughly printed the first layer after the resume 5-10 steps above the print then lowered to the print, but about 1 layer up.. I still have 1 of them skipped layer and all

I fully expected to have print errors due to overhangs and flimsy auto generated supports. Those I can live with as long as I can recover from head crashes and goo buildup on the heater block.
This is my first major print job and I presented my info as a background of what I am trying to do. (hopefully semi successfully so I can bring the print to the Doctor that treated my brain problem)
My main goal with this post is to point out the firmware problems relating to pausing the print, hopefully to be addressed in a firmware update.
1) The head temperature should go back up when you hit the resume button
2) The print should resume at the level where it left off, not above it.
3) If you do hit preheat, there should be a option to preheat the head at the temperature you were last using.
