ABS filament coming out side of extruder

I'm having a problem where in the middle of a print the ABS filament that I'm using starts going out the hexagon hole in the side of the extruder housing. It has happened twice now. What's going on?

It may be heat creep since you said it was in the middle of the print, so lower the extruder temp. Maybe try tightening the extruder idler as well.

Can you attach a photo?

This is surprising for ABS. ABS is usually too stiff to pop out like that. It happens sometimes with flexible filaments.

The one thing I can think of is maybe you're trying to print using PLA settings, which is much too cool for ABS. This could cause enough back-pressure that the filament might do this. What's the print temperature shown on the display?

Re: ABS filament coming out side of extruder

I am haveing the same problem it has happend to me many times after a couple of hours into any print. I am no be able to finish any longer print. Printing Taulman Bridge. Tried 255 degrees and 275 degrees. Last time it happend I had a wet rag on the extruder motor since I thougt the problem was that the extruder motor is too hot. If I squeeze it with my hands I can not hold it, to hot, is this normal?

motor temp can be as high as something like 50c or more This is normal per Joseph P. and Yes i am aware of how hot it is, i took several thermal picture of it.
Can you open the flap to get a picture of the bondtech and the pfte tubing below it? i'm wondering if that has slipped down and is no longer providing a direct path into the extruder. Abs should grind, not spew out the side. if your pfte has slipped down it may be crushed on the bottom end giving you a restricted area that causes this to happen

Try slowing your print speeds down (specifically, the infill). I agree with above, that BOTH of you should experience grinding, not that... That never happend to me... And I have printed a few 2 hour ABS prints. (not many yet... Still working on perfecting ABS)

Thanks for the reply.
Here is the picture.
Should the ptfe stick up more?

All the photos I've seen (still waiting on shipping for my machine), it's quite visible, can't even see it in your photo

See https://help.prusa3d.com/l/en/article/3EMxwPQU0B-bondtech-extruder-gears for reference.

Is the bottom of the heatsink sitting flush with the body?

uhhh.... let me rephrase your question
"Should I have a PTFE tube?"

Yes, yes you should and it should also go most of the way up to the bondtech gears.

alternatively chew through that thread....there it is explained why flexibles pop out, and 3 solutions presented to prevent that. I guess it's the same mechanics with ABS and Nylon if they are on the soft side.

I don't think the problem is the tube, as I can hear my extruder clicking and failing to push the filament through long before the filament comes out the side. Something is preventing the filament from moving through the extruder.

Re: ABS filament coming out side of extruder

I wanted to post that I MAY have found the problem. The default slic3r settings make my infill printing speed 200mm/s, which I think is too fast for my filament. My problem seemed to occur mostly on large parts with lots of infill. I have reduced my infill speed to 100mm/s and my extruder has not clogged since. Which means that I've had 3 successful prints in a row. Almost all of my problems have been Slic3r PE default settings, except for the fact that I was getting Y layer shift when printing via USB.

I think this problem is related to this one:

The motor is heating the filament it seems
