7X7 Mesh Bed Leveling much faster on new printer

Hi.  I have two 'identical' MK3S+ printers.  First one was shipped in mid December, second one was shipped May 7th.

Just got done doing the 'nylock nut mod' and it became painfully apparent that the 7X7 mesh bed leveling is significantly slower on the 'older' printer.   Both printers are set to probe 5 times per spot.  The older printer seems to 'bounce' the Z axis 5 times per spot, while the newer one seems to take readings much faster and only 'bounces' the Z axis occasionally here and there.   The newer printer is at least twice as fast to complete the 7X7(x5) bed mesh.

Firmware is the same on both printers.

I know in the scope of a long print this is no big deal.   But I often prototype small parts quickly, and it's a noticeable time waster to use the older printer compared to the newer one.   Another example, the calibration of the nylock mod took much much longer on the older printer since I had to run many 7X7 G80's.

Anyone have any idea what the difference here might be?

Have you verified that the older printer is set to use the same 7x7 mesh bed leveling settings? The MBL procedure has become much faster since the original Mk3 release, but you do have to enable some features in the printer menu. If all else fails, you might try a factory reset and recalibration, but I wouldn't start there.

The only settings I'm aware of are:

-3x3 or 7x7 grid
-1, 3 0r 5 probes per location
- Magnet comp on/off

Both printers are set for 7x7 with 5 probes per location, magnet comp on for both printers.  Are there other settings?

Nope, just wanted to verify that all the sub-settings matched up. Are both SuperPINDA equipped? I know Prusa has been sourcing different parts lately due to supply chain issues. Perhaps one batch or another of some part matters? Any obvious difference in appearance between them (e.g., PINDA probe)?

They look identical, both have black tips.

The one difference between the two printers, is that the buzzer in the display panel is much louder, and a different tone, in the newer printer, which made me think maybe that control board is different.  It's not due to speaker volume settings, as those are also both set the same.

Do both printers make the same moves when probing or is one making higher moves?

I have seen that sometimes on my printer and I think it is because the difference between the current probing value is to value that was stored when first calibrating is to big. And that makes the printer re probe the same point again (and making the higher z move)

What fixed that for me is after doing the nylock mod and getting the bed level I have to do the XYZ calibration again. I think that stores the current values and speeds up the bed levelling.

I'll give that a shot.  However, when doing the nylock mod, your bed level doesnt really change, because you're still using the same spacer in the center position.   It's just that now you are leveling out the edges to match the center.   But hey, a calibration can never hurt right?? 🙂

Here is a video showing the difference.

Interesting. Your top (slow) printer seems to be operating at the original MBL speed. My upgraded Mk3 with the 3.9 firmware levels like your bottom (fast) printer. I can't think of a setting that would affect this, nor any reason it would bother a Mk3s. Might be worth contacting support via chat if nobody here has any ideas.

So update, I worked with Prusa support on this for a couple of weeks here.  They have been awesome as usual.   Checked lots of things.   Factory reset the printer, reflashed firmware, adjusted PINDA, verified both printers are running a SUPERPINDA, nothing has worked.   No matter what, the older printer takes its sweet time during MBL.   Support asked me to swap the PINDAs between printers to see if the issue followed it, but I declined, don't want to unbundle/rebundle the umbilical cord from the Einsy to the extruder, and also don't really want to mess with the printer that works.   I'll try a new PINDA when I place my next spare parts order, they did offer me a voucher to cover the cost of the PINDA.  When I get around to that. I'll post results.

@twoballscrewball

Please do post the results.  I do not have a plus outside of upgrades.  The faster operation might be a reason to buy more.

Have you checked that the slower one isn’t in silent mode? I note that if in silent mode the probing is slower.

Most likely bed is not adjusted properly after mod. When is getting slower mean that sensor detecting some big difference in height( some abstraction ).
You should always heat up bed before doing Mesh Bed Leveling.
Also check if bed have some warping, check z - hight.

I also did nylon-lock mod and have almost the same problem when bed is cold but everything is perfect with warm bed.

This printer has been this way since it was new.  I've also recently done the nylock mod on both printers, and I have my entire bed within +/- 0.01 from 0.

I have tried MBL on a hot bed (90C) and a cold bed, no difference.

I have done a full factory reset and XYZ calibration, no difference.

Printer is not in silent/stealth mode.

Both printers were delivered at firmware 3.9 and have both been updated to 3.10.

Believe me, we (Prusa support and I) have tried everything short of swapping out the pinda and einsy board now.

My MBL has slowed down too. You are not alone.

If I understand , you did swap Pinda sensors and no changes ?
Did u try to measure resistance on disconnected Pinda? And compare them?

I have not swapped pindas, as I do not want to unnecessarily disturb anything on the working printer.

What pins should I measure on the Pinda to check resistance, and what should the value be?  I can do that at the plug at the Einsy board.

To me, it happened after the change from PINDA (MK3S MMU2S) to SPINDA (MK3S+ MMU2S)

I'm not sure that there is something useful to measure. PINDAs are active elements. They need supply voltage to work. Also, they are inductive switches. So they only offer on/off states.

I just look at video again and notice that bottom printer has PINDA lights on when moving and upper printer PINDA light off.  If I'm correct lights should be on when metal (bed) is not detected and off when detected.  Could be wrong wiring?
