3 KG spools. Do they work well on our printers.

I see 3kg spools in the Prusa print farm, but Prusa's is a volume production facility that doesn't attempt to make high finish quality pieces, just functional parts. Witness the fairly slopping surface finish on their preprinted parts. I typically want quite a bit better print quality than that.

How do 3Kg spools interact with our printers if one also wants really nice surface finishes and consistent extrusion? Is the extra unspooling force ok?

I imagine it's fine; the printer doesn't have to pull 3kg as the spool is wound and so naturally balanced; I doubt you need much extra force over a standard 1kg spool. I think it's been proposed before that the farm parts are printed at thicker layers than 0.15 and with higher speeds than default.

One thing to note is that PR does not hang the larger spools from the printer frame. I use 2.5Kg and 4Kg spools, but with a reverse bowden to direct the pulling force downward instead of sideways or upward.

Anything can be made better

Separate bearing based spool holder here. Good to hear you are having positive results with larger spools. I'm interested because the little 0.75 kg Polymax spools run out too fast. They have 3 kg spools available.

been using the matterhacker 5lb pla spools for awhile - work great on the "universal autorewind spool holder " 3kg version., feeding the mmu with them now
