Y axis crash

Made printer from kit, and have been through a couple of spools of pla. Prints looked great.... then,

Y axis crash in the middle of a print. Reinstalled firmware and performed calibration wizard. Says printer is ok.

Y axis still crashes. first layer can not be done due to y axis crash.

Reinstalled firmware again. Ran calibration wizard again. First layer still crashes.

Printer worked great for 4 months, now it's an expensive paperweight.

Any ideas?

RE: Y axis crash

Turn power off and move Y carriage by hand.

It must be equally smooth both directions.

If you suspect bad bearings, put light oil on the rails. If it fixes it, lubricate your bearings properly. Oil is a temporary fix.

If it does not fix it, try loosening the U-Bolts. Too tight crushes the bearings.

Check for a loose pulley and check the idler while you are in there.

@robert-rmm200

Thank you for your reply.

Y carriage moves smoothly, entire process of XYZ calibration is completed with no problems.

Y pulley and belt are OK.

I also formatted a new sd card and re-sliced the print thinking G code was corrupt. Nothing helps.

Also check for anything that might hit the Y axis while printing. Zip ties are bad for this, as are the Y and extruder cables.

Try to watch it about the time you expect failures. If it dies on the first layer - you won't have long to watch.

Understand what a "Crash" is. It means the Y stepper motor encountered unexpected resistance.

@wdhwood

Have you activated crash detection? If so, turn it off and try print again.

Do take note that disabling crash protection is much like disabling a fire alarm because you don't like the noise.

Disabling it is fine for a test - but make sure to correct the underlying issue. And turn it back on when done.

Thank you all for your advice.

I don't know why, but things appear to be working again.

 I did nothing to the printer but leave it alone for a couple of days while I attended a funeral.

Now it works.

All the best!
