Will goo-gone work just as well as Limonene?

Seems like the only purpose of Limonene is to remove the adhesive from the flexible spring steel plate after the PEI has been peeled off (i.e. when changing the PEI from the spring steel). Unless it's a peculiar adhesive (and maybe it is, I would think goo-gone would work.

Anyone tried goo-gone (or anything else) successfully for this purpose?

IPA and Acetone was a way to go for me. It took longer and required patience but it was inexpensive and straight forward.

I used Limonene and Acetone. I spent several hours scraping and cleaning and still didn’t get all of the residue off.

I suppose paint stripper might be an option also. That's devil's brew will pretty much strip anything off, and generally pretty fast too. Just use it outdoors, and use a gas mask too.

Goo Off is what worked best for me. It's acetone with some other additives, helped me remove the adhesive in about 10-15 minutes with a scrapper. Just be aware that this stuff is VERY strong. It ate through my vinyl gloves and reacted with my table in seconds (dropped some).

I believe the adhesive is a 3M acrylic type and is impervious to most solvents. I've never used limonene so I don't know how it works. I have used acetone and Goo Gone. Neither will melt the adhesive so that it just rinses off. What they will do is prevent the adhesive from re-adhering to the heat bed as you scrape it off. I believe the Goo Gone works better for that purpose because it covers the bed and won't evaporate like the acetone. Then wash the Goo Gone off the bed with acetone before applying the new sheet.

I'm still new with PRUSA and 3D printing. Is this conversation about the best method to remove the residue from the old PEI sheet before applying the new one below?

Removing the PEI sheet adhesive residue.

Maybe I didn't word it correctly, but it's the preparation for adding this item from PRUSA correct?

Yes, it's about removing the old one and cleaning up the adhesive before applying the new one.

Thank you, I'll monitor this tread because I've ordered two to have on hand because I've put a few small marks on mine as I've been learning.

Yes, Goo Gone works fine. That's what I have used so far and it's excellent.

For the record, the major ingredient in Goo Gone is Limonene.... so.....

Well, I'll be damned. You are right. It contains D-Limonene according to its MSDS.

I'm going to try this first though: http://www.jasco-help.com/product/premium-paint-epoxy-remover
In the past it was more potent than anything else I've tried for removing adhesives. I'm hoping to find something where the chemicals do the work and my need to scrape is minimized.

Re: Will goo-gone work just as well as Limonene?

I just did two beds. Goo Gone works, but it took me about three rounds with the paper towels and plastic bag plus around of acetone and a lot of elbow grease with the plastic scraper. I just had the regular bottle, not the super strength.
I didn't try goof off. I suspect it would also work, but it smells worse and is a little worse for the user.
Do the scraping outside if you can.

The paint stripper worked! I just now finished trying it. I spread it on and then came back in 15 minutes. By then the adhesive had developed a jelly like consistency roughly like fresh rubber cement. When I then lightly hit it with a nylon brush, it scraped off very easily. No real effort required.:D

I hope this info is useful to others.

I picked up this at Walmart, because I happened to be there:
http://www.kleanstrip.com/product/premium-stripper
So that is what I used.

I suspect the Jasco I had linked earlier might be even stronger.

Thank you David,
I doubt if that's available in the UK

I would try NitroMors
washable stripper, here

I have yet to replace a pei sheet!

Lucky you! Windex didn't work for me as an anti-stick for PETG, which ripped out chunks of the PEI. I guess I'll try your talc suggestion next.

I'd like to have a couple extra spring steel build plates on hand, but there are not any in the Prusa store. Does anyone else make them that are compatible with the MK3? If not, is tempered glass an option, and if so who sells sheets of the right size? For instance, I'd very much like to try PrintBite as a build surface, but it's just a sticker like the PEI is. It's made in the UK. I guess maybe I'll just put PEI on one side and then try printbite on the other? Oh, except, that's likely to warp, isn't it, if they have different coefficients of thermal expansion.

Joan! You haven't lived! There's nothing quite like the stench of fresh limonene in the morning! 🙂

It does work though. I did it once so far on the Mk2/S bed but it will never be a favourite pastime of mine. I think the separate steel sheets will be a little easier though as you don't have to remove the bed from the printer any more.

Amazon UK will sell you one litre of industrial strength limonene and it is potent stuff. Based on usage so far it should last a lifetime 🙂
