Which filaments trigger "Running out of filament"

That would be nice if we could tell which filaments trigger "Running out of filament".
Here are some filaments I've used.

Prima Select
PETG Easyprint Black solid, trigg's "Running out of filament" and I have to turn off the filament sensor.

PETG Prima Select Transparent green, no problem
PETG Prima Select Transparent blue, no problem

Add: North
PETG Red metallic, no problem
PLA Black, no problem
PLA White, no problem

Frustratingly inconsistent, so it's hard to try to "fix" but I have a glossy black PETG (prima select) that I wouldn't trust to print without error.

Glossy,
Translucent, / transparent,
green shades,
Blacks...
combination of above

I thought for sure my translucent green or my tglasse clear would trigger it so I could try to invent a solution - but they both worked fine!

frustrating isn't it!

I have had failures to detect end of filament until it's below the Bondtech's and cannot be spat back out, but every time I try to video it, the sensor works correctly...

frustrating indeed!

Re: Which filaments trigger "Running out of filament"

I have run through 4 entire spools of transparent filament with no issues, then suddenly, in the middle of a spool, it started repeatedly triggering. I have built a debug version of the firmware with sensor logging enabled to see what it says. I'd like to capture a false "out of filament" event, but even knowing what the readings look like when working could be useful.

The algorithm that detects the end of filament feels very simplistic to me, but if the sensor consistently reported accurate values, it would work fine.

IMO enough of them that they should completely remove the filament sensor and simplify the design without it, would save weight also which is always good on the extruder section.

Re: Which filaments trigger "Running out of filament"

It turns out that mine was simply dirty. I was getting basically random numbers back from the sensor, so I pulled it out and cleaned it with 99% isopropyl. It's back to working fine. I've printed maybe 5 spools of filament, but that was enough to completely foul up the sensor.

2018-07-11 16:07:46,843 - Recv: cnt=280 dy=-11 NG ! err=1

After:
2018-07-11 23:43:57,813 - Recv: cnt=280 dy=57 OK err=0
2018-07-11 23:43:58,013 - Recv: cnt=280 dy=48 OK err=0

2018-07-11 23:43:58,415 - Recv: cnt=280 dy=50 OK err=0
2018-07-11 23:43:58,612 - Recv: cnt=280 dy=60 OK err=0

It makes me really curious about what values the problem filaments would return, but I haven't run into any yet.

Re: Which filaments trigger "Running out of filament"

I haven't had any false triggers since I got the 2.5 upgrade several months ago. I've printed with PETG black, translucent orange, white, and clear (although I don't remember if I preemptively disabled the sensor for that one). I suspect most of the problems people are having are the result of faulty/dirty sensors or some kind of variation in how the extruder body is printed.

So, is the part to clean just under the U1 label on the circuit board?

Yes, though you might as well clean the whole board if you take the time to remove it. However, it may be easier to first try Prusa's recommendation of cleaning using compressed air through a hole in the extruder body. See step 2 of this page:
