What to do when metal balls coming out from the bearing (i3MK3S/+)

Hi, during i3MK3S to i3MK3S+ upgrade, when I tried to put back the X-axis Assembly to the vertical rods, a few small balls came out from the bearing. Do I have to worry about damaging the printer further if I continue to use it without those few small balls? Is it better to get a new set of bearings?

In case of replacement, any bearing better than the one chosen by Prusa for this printer?

The manual states 1 or 2 out is OK, any more and order new bearings.

If you are very careful it is possible to pop them back into place, although its probably OK with just a few.

@clarmrrsn

Thanks. Due to the expensive international shipping cost, let's try it with the understanding that it needs to be replaced sooner or later. So if I hear strange sound or it does not move smoothly, then I need to get it replaced right away? Is it better to buy the same one from Prusa or any LMU88 bearings (if this is the correct one) will work fine?

Are there bearings better than the LMU88? I am not sure if changing it to another one would mess up print settings.

Prusa uses LMU8 compatible Misumi linear bearings. They are available in many locations. If your bearings have lost balls I would replace the bearings and not wait as long until the rods are damaged.

Thanks. I saw a slot in the bearing with some empty space so I pushed those lost balls back in. Not sure if all the lost balls came from the same slot though. At least it slides smoothly up and down. Do I still need to worry about it?

@prusanewuser

As a temporary fix, it will probably last a while. In the longer term, it is better to replace the rods and the linear bearings. Be sure to lubricate the new bearings sufficiently!
