What is this coming out of my nozzle, and where is it coming from?

I've had periodic "blobs" of brown-ish / orange-ish marks come out in my prints, and I think it is coming from my past use of orange PLA (i've only ever printed with PLA, of a couple brands, no other materials have been printed yet). Though I'm not sure if it's just leftovers from bad retraction testing experiments somewhere up in there, or if it just happens to be something else unrelated.

Do you think this is, in fact, leftover orangle PLA, or is it burned filament, etc.?

I'm not really sure myself but I just wanted to comment that I bought some cleaning filament recently and it brought out a lot more than I was expecting. I have also started doing more cold pulls between filament changes to help reduce the leftover colors to worry about.

That looks like cooked filament. You've probably got some accumulated around your nozzle and heater block. Occasionally, it snags or drops into your print filament and you get those ugly discolorations. Read up on doing cold pulls to clean out the extruder between filament changes, and get a brass wire brush to occasionally clean off the heater block while raised and heated. Be careful of the heater and thermistor cartridge wires while doing so. Cleaning filament can be useful for clearing things out. I like eSun.

That, or take it to a vet and have it checked for worms.

Mine always extrudes neat little nooses. I sometimes think it's trying to tell me something.

depending on the filament and especially if you print various types this will occur. when i go from abs to PLA and back to abs i will sometimes have the previous abs color appear since the PLA temps aren't enough to push all the abs out. make sure you purge at the highest temp of the two materials.

Also check if there is a leak between the nozzle and the heat block, if so tighten the nozzle again.
