What can cause the filament to melt *before* the heat break?
I couldn't load a new filament without it jamming, so I took my printhead apart and found that the prior filament had melted *before* the heatbreak. So, after having cooled down, it was no longer heating up enough to allow new filament to get past it.
So, I'm wondering, how did melted filament end up before the heatbreak in the first place? Was it pulled up and left there by the filament unloading process? That's about all I can think of.
More importantly: what can I do to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Could have been retractions that were too large. Also not extruding before unloading could cause it.
