RE: What brand of filament does everyone recommend?

@neek

I'm on about my 20th roll of Sunlu PLA+

You MUST use gluestick and I use a bed temp of 70c and extruder 210-215

It's a really strong filament and the colours are really good.

However, be warned, I have had a problem recently with contaminated rolls (especially black) where once you get into the inner layers of filament, there is a white powder on the roll which is like glue and completely clogs up the extruder. It's a shame as I really liked it until this started being a thing and I have had to return a few rolls

I strongly recommend  Polylite PLA by Polymaker.

Needing glue stick with PLA is surprising. According to Prusa, glue stick is used as a releasing agent so that materials like Flex and PETG don't stick too much to the sheet. Now that I've gotten my Z-height and temps dialed in well, if I'm printing with PLA, I only use glue stick at the front of the sheet, where the extruder primes itself with that first line of material.

Also my new absolute #1 favorite material other than Prusament PETG has become KronRex PETG. I bought a 1kg roll from Ebay for about $20. The yellow color is gorgeous, and by far I've made the best looking prints with it, though I'm not sure why.

Indeed it is surprising, but I have got through enough of the Sunlu PLA+ to know that if you don't use gluestick, at some point the print will fall off, that's if you can even get the first layer to stick. The non + version of their PLA does not require this, so something in the additives in the + version makes it this way

Awesome tip. thanks. I have a mix of their PLA and PLA+. I'll try your suggestion next time if I have issues.

I'm in the USA (Massachusetts) and print mainly with PLA.  The locale electronics stores sells MG Chemicals and I find it prints very nice and have never had a problem.

Also in MA. Which store is that? I'm only aware of Inland at Microcenter.

Don't get me wrong..... This is an honest question. The MG Chemicals PLA is about $65 for 1kg. Is it that good? I've only printed with eSun, Inland, and my single roll of Prusa Silver. I've printed PLA and PETG. The MG comes to over 2X the price of any of these filaments. I can see the high price for speciality filaments, but for PLA? What qualities do you get for the extra cost?

I just purchased 8 spools at this price.  I have been purchasing form the same source for over a year now at this price. (click the picture to see what I pay, not sure why it doesn't show up otherwise

You-Do-it.  I went to their website, ordered and picked up about an hour later.  Enjoy!

I've had good luck with Hatchbox, both PLA and ABS,  and Mika3d PLA as well as Prusament, of course, in PLA and PETG.

Hatchbox seems to be increasingly hard to find (in stock or at a decent price), so I have some Overture, Reprapper and Ultraline on order.

I've also tried a sample pack of Amazon Basics 50g loose rolls of PLA and had no problems with any of those that I have tried yet.

I also have had really good luck with 3DSolutech - however the business going on seems to have made it scarce. Paramount has some fantastic colors that also match Pantone - Also prints well.  I've found that most issues are limited to a specific run of filament (too much moisture or just a foul-up at the factory) I've even gotten good pieces with a no-name 3D pen sampler from Amazon just to try our colors. I guess, loquaciously, I'm saying that your printer may need some calibration for a specific brand but I've not found one I can't print with.

My order of preference: 3DSolutech, SUNLU, Paramount, Hatchbox, Matterhackers... sorted by my perceived value per dollar.

Hope that helps...

Thank you.

I just ordered two spools of Paramount, 'Primordial Earth' and 'Iron Red' and I've never used them, and happy to see that you've had good luck.  They did include Pantone swatches and the Iron Red looks about as close to a brick red as I can get.  The Primordial Earth looks close to a gray stone building that I am modeling.  (I'm doing some model RR buildings.)

You can order a 40 color sampler (it's awesome) to see first hand the colors. If you're doing RR check out castle limestone gray...

I use Sunlu pla+ and Sunlu petg. They are both great filments and I have been using blue painter tape to get them to stick. Had the same problem everyone else was have till I started using the painter tape. Now it works everytime with no problem with correct first layer setting.
