To e-step calibrate or not?

As expected, you will find conflicting information on the internet. 😥

Reading about extruder calibration in general, I see that there are 2 things to do: 1. Steps calibration and 2. Multiplier calibration. However, I also found information on this forum and on bondtech site http://www.bondtech.se/en/faq/ that says that these/our gears use a fix value for steps and should not be changed. I guess that the firmware and Prusa did their math to tune the number. But then again I see in this forum and on FB that some people are still doing the steps calibration.

So what is the official answer? I never saw something coming from Prusa folks so not sure what to follow. As I receive my printer kit this week, I was going to measure the steps vs filament and hope they match. But if they don’t then what? What did you guys/gals do?

Thanks
Gaston

Re: To e-step calibrate or not?

I used to do this but now since my 2.5 upgrade i tweak it in the slicer.
To messy to e-step calibrate for each and every filament.

Re: To e-step calibrate or not?

I have never E-step calibrated my MK3, I feel it's a relative setting so I just adjust the extrusion multiplier for what works best with each filament (and sometimes even color) and print layer thickness. Right or wrong it works fine for me.

Re: To e-step calibrate or not?

1mm =1mm

1mm = 280 microsteps

It honestly makes no difference, as mechinacally, 1 step is 1 step.

I just Adjust extrusion multiplier in my slicer.

Getting it prefect is the challenge.

Hi, I'm Sean. I used to work on CNC machines.
I try to not make mistakes, but the decision is YOURS.
Please feel free to donate to my filament/maintance fund.

I did both and it is noticeable better than stock my steps where off 1mm and my multiplier was off.01mm

Re: To e-step calibrate or not?

I calibrated the teh steps on my MK2S, moving to MK2.5 i have not.
The difference between filaments and even colors from the same brand make you need to tweek the extrusion multiplier in the slicer anyway.

Just my 2 cent.
