Textured Sheet

Hi

I have had my MK3S for well over a year and have always used the smooth sheets but recently purchased a Textured sheet since most everyone was using one and decided to give it a try. I cleaned it extremely well with IPA yet I am having a hard time trying to get PLA to stick to it even going as low as I dare to. For my smooth sheets my Live Z was around -800ish, for the textured I went as far as -1.120 yet I still cannot get it to stick and the small square at the end of the Live Z print was almost transparent so I knew it was way too low. I posted this out on Facebook and Im getting mixed reviews. Some say the Textured sheet does not work well with PLA, others say it does. Some say wash it with soap and water but the blog says No Water, only IPA and Im using 91% BTW.

Others are saying the textured sheet was really for PETG which I can understand since PETG is a pain to remove from the smooth sheet.

Enlighten me please?

Also I need to update the firmware on my MK3S and reading earlier I thought I seen Plate Profiles are now available?

RE: Textured Sheet

I have very limited experience with the textured sheet since I just received it, but I'm seeing the same thing with PLA.  It's basically unusable for me.  I've had squares as big as 3.5" x 3" just peel off the sheet while printing.  That's fine with me as I still intend to use the smooth sheet for PLA, and I bought the textured sheet for PETG.

I've avoided even using PETG because it sticks so solidly to the smooth sheet.  I've yet to have a good chance to try it with the textured sheet.

The new firmware does a great job with sheet profiles, so I would definitely recommend the upgrade.

RE: Textured Sheet

I have had the same problem.

I have the smooth and the textured flexible sheets. I use 3 types of filament ASA, PLA and PETG.

PLA will stick very well but the sheet must be very clean.

I never use ASA with the smooth sheet. It does not stick - it actually bonds. 😣

I have a different Live Z setting for each type of filament with each sheet. PLA - the nozzle is the closest to the sheet because it needs to be pushed down. PETG is up higher - it prefers to lay down not smooshed into the sheet. ASA likes slight push down. ASA sticks too good and needs a very light layer of 'glue stick' as a bonding interface.

To keep all this in order I have a small strip of making tape on the lower right edge of each sheet with the filament type and live Z level.

example             'ASA 0.750 PETG 0.600'   etc

When I start the print with a different filament I dial in the correct live Z level. Each plate (and the coating material) are a different thickness.

Yea I have been putting it off and the printer still has the next version up from the base firmware on it so its time and since they just released the latest I may as well get both feet wet. Every time I load a Prusa Slicer gcode it barks at me to upgrade so its time 🙂

I'm printing all filaments on all sheets (foiled and textured) without any problems, also PA12, PA6, PC a.s.o. (PA6/12 with glue)

I always clean the print bed with a degreasing soap and warm water (maybe some drops IPA 99.9%). Then do not touch with your fingers. The most important thing is the first layer. Sometimes you have to play with the life z-value a while until the printpart sticks.

The printbed glue is not attacked by the water, so it's no problem to wash with warm water. I have never had a problem with it in all these years.

I would currently recommend the fw 3.8.1. This includes editable printing plate profiles: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-general-discussion-announcements-and-releases/firmware-3-8-0-final-for-original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-2/

I have been using only the textured sheet and have used it with tons and tons of PLA, PETG, and Ninjaflex.  I have printed  relatively small things and quite large things in PLA and PETG and all with success.  I have a PEI sheet I bought also, but have literally never used it and haven't found a reason why I would yet.

I think my first issues when I first started using it was a couple things.

1.  All 91% IPA is not equal.  Some users said not to use SamsClub variety and once I started using only Wal-Greens brand I've had no issues on that front.  I think this helped me a lot.  That and for PLA clean it a lot with IPA.  Use a paper towel and don't touch it with your fingers at all.  Once I made sure it was super clean with IPA and didn't touch the surface I didn't have issues with sticking anymore.  I have never washed it with soap and water (just IPA91) and no issues since the first day.

2.  My Z cal for my textured sheet is at -1.185 now and I get a perfect first layer every time.  I went until the first layer was flat but not transparent like you mentioned and not half round on the line as if it was too high.  I hope this helps, as I had trouble finding good info on this also for the textured sheet.  Obviously it'll be different for you but maybe this will help somehow.

RE: Textured Sheet

I had the same issue.  What worked for me is to rub the snot out of the textured sheet with a mr clean magic eraser until it's not so shiny anymore.  after that it holds PLA and PETG just fine.  For mw the difference in offset between the 2 sheets is exactly 0.30 apart.
