Strange behaviour after pause

When I run the Prusa Slicer, I ask it to pause at a certain layer, so that I can embed some nuts into the print.

Before the pause, the print goes exactly as I would expect it to, but after the pause, several things change.  Firstly, I get the situation shown in the above photo.  The edge of the print tapers inwards until it gets almost to the top (where infill stops an a full layer is printed), secondly, the print gets very stringy, and finally, when the head is travelling to the next place that it will print (so not printing at that time), it moves very, very slowly, much slower than I would expect it to move when it is printing the first layer.

I run the printer via Octoprint, and looking at the Gcode viewer, it shows the printer head running in a straight line, whereas it is obvious looking at it, that it isn't.  Over a distance of about 140mm, it moves in something like 1mm.  The print is basically a rectangular box, with rounded ends, the inside edges are printed correctly, and the problem occurs on both straight outside edges.  On one side the right hand end is tapered in, on the other side it is the left hand end, so the sides remain parallel, but not where they should be.

This is something I've come across a couple of times, different prints, so not a problem with a certain design.

Thoughts welcome.
