Re: Slic3r Prusa Edition 1.40.1 - RC2

Wanted to give a Heads Up about a new Windows 10 feature that is going to cause havoc. I am part of the Windows Insider Preview program, on the Fast Track, so I get all the updates first to test out. One of the new features is Ransomware Protection. This is causing me issues because programs do not expect it to exist and therefor cannot work around it.

It blocks access to a lot of folders; the Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and Videos. This is to prevent someone from encrypting them on you, I assume. The problem is that the newest Installer for 1.40.1 will not install unless I turn off the protection. It errors out trying to install the test prints.

I first ran into this when I suddenly could not save my gcodes onto the desktop (from Slic3r or S3D) which I have always done. I put them on the desktop for ease of locating, since I move them to the SDCard for printing.

Anyway, you can add programs to the "bypass protection" list, but that does not help for installations.

Again, just a heads up so that when the posts start happening you will know why. Control of this new protection feature can be found in Settings - VIrus and Threat Protection - Ransomware Protection.

Isn't this feature already present in existing W10 version? It's called folder protection or similar... the only problem is that it seems that microsoft doesn't even know what programs he develops and sell, because this famous "protection" prevents perfectly legally purchased Office 2016 from running. I disabled this function veeeery quickly. Occasionally prevented even native windows services from running 😮 😯

Any idea on when we will get close supports (Github #926)
https://github.com/prusa3d/Slic3r/issues/926

I'd really like to ditch Cura for tricky prints, but Slic3r's supports don't cut it yet.

Hi Thomas, try disabling the filament sensor in the printer's menu. It might be the sensor is sending bad readings about the filament. Let me know, if it helped.

Can you please let us know what's the build number you're currently using? We'll check it out.

"It errors out trying to install the test prints" - just to be sure: do you let them install into the usual Public Documents folder?

Re: Slic3r Prusa Edition 1.40.1 - FINAL

since 1.40.1 background processing is not working any more. (no Problems with beta)

when i load a part and then use slice now, everything works fine.
when using background processing, sliver shuts down after 2 seconds.

(all 12 Threads start working for a second on my i7-8700K, same with "slice now", same on other PC with i7-7700k)

i used every version starting with alpha, never had a problem.

Re: Slic3r Prusa Edition 1.40.1 - FINAL

I have an issue with Slic3r, that I haven't raised as a bug, as I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing.

I had a diagonal flaw appear on a print. The extruder would hesitate for a fraction of a second, and glitch, as though it was catching on something. At first, I thought a piece of PLA had over-extruded, and was catching the nozzle.

However, the next print did the same, so I looked more carefully in Slic3r. I was using the beta before this final version 1.40.1+

I upgraded to the final version, thinking it might be an issue with the beta, but no.

Sure enough, you can see the problem, so it wasn't the machine, it was Slic3r. I've attached some pictures, one with the 'Unretractions' tick box off, and one with it on. This was on the .020 default setting. If I choose another profile, the flaw appears in a different place on the perimeter.

I split the .stl file in Fusion 360, and reloaded it, just in case the diamond shapes (all 45 degrees, so I didn't need support material) were affecting Slic3r, but no, it did the same without them (pic attached).

I tried a different gcode 'flavour', but it made no difference. Is it me, or is this a bug?

I believe those are the "seam" created when the extruder stops one layer and shifts to another. It's more apparent in some models than others, and your view angle and zoom may hide it. Here's how it looks on mine:

Try adjusting Print Settings->Advanced->Seam Position and you should be able to make it move around. You can (obviously) never get rid of it.

What OS (build) are you using? Background processing works for me on macOS (10.14 Beta).

Re: Slic3r Prusa Edition 1.40.1 - FINAL

i tried it on my PC:
Win 10 x64 (1803, build 17134.137) enterprise
i7-8700k , 64 GB RAM, z370 board.

and on my Notebook
Dell XPS 15, i7-6700, 32GB Ram, same windows.

had the same issue on both machines.

The Problem started with the final Version. no issues from first alpha untill now.

It's no big problem, because slicing works manually, but i love the background feature. it much faster when you change something.

Question about Auto Speeds.
Is this now OK to use with 1.40.1, or should I still use manually set individual feature speeds, what is the current recommendation about Auto ?

I'm trying Auto speeds with the max speed set to my reliable maximum (40mm/s on my Mk I i3) and getting OK prints but the speeds for some features like infill can be painfully slow for no apparent reason. Wondering if it's not recommended yet.

Thanks guys.

As long as I know it's something I have to work around, and not a ghost in the machine, I'm fine... 😀

I'll play with that setting. Thanks again.

Hi Martin,
which speeds would you like to change? Please specify the material and layer height as well. In general, our profiles are constantly tweaked for the best performance and same goes to the overall Slic3r PE settings, so I'm sure it has some reason. For example slow movements can be caused by a minimal time on a layer, so the material has time to cool down and solidify.

It's a completely DIY Prusa with a Buderschnozzle geared extruder, using Marlin on a Melzi board, and a lot of custom parts, hence I didn't ask about machine specific speeds relating to factory Prusa's as they won't match my machine physics I assumed (maybe wrongly).
The question was to work out why infill on a couple of prints runs at snails pace and gets messy at the start of each infill feature after the perimeters run at a reasonable speed. I'm sure I can fix the issue by setting manual speeds for infill, but I wondered why auto speed is not working like I imagined (did it ever get sorted out after the advice some long time ago to not use it ?).
The layer print time is well above the cooling slow down threshold, so that shouldn't be effecting infill speed.
Layers are 0.2 and using ABS.
