Recommended filament?

Hey all,

Just got my MK3S+ today, and have printed a few smaller objects successfully.  I'd like to buy more filament - various colors.  I know Prusa sells filament, but just wondered what others have been buying and having success with.  I'm looking for cost-effective PLA 1.75mm in various colors that doesn't have horrible quality.  Any recommendations?

PrusaMent is very high quality. Unfortunately, it can be a bit expensive and hard to get. The good news is that most of the well-known brands of filament are very good these days. I've used quite a few with no issue on my Prusa Mk3, including:

  • Inland (from Microcenter. Cheap and really great if you have a store nearby.)
  • eSun
  • Gizmo Dorks
  • Paramount (great military and scifi color assortment)
  • 3D Solutech
  • Polymaker
  • MatterHackers (free shipping as fast as Amazon somehow)
  • AtomicFilament (very consistent stuff)
  • Overture
  • 3D Fuel (incl. recycled)
  • RePLAy 3D (recycled PLA)
  • Greengate (recycled PETG)
  • AIO Robotics (1lb spools, cheaper but hard to find now)
  • ColorFabb

And many others. Most work just fine. You may want to do a bit of calibration for filament diameter and extrusion multiplier, but I mostly go by color desired for my project, and price. I do like to order direct when possible and avoid feeding Amazon when so many companies that directly support our community are competitive.

Oh, also should have mentioned Filastruder.com. They have good stuff also available in spool-less format.

Spectrum is now available in the U.S.; https://en.spectrumfilaments.com/

They are my absolute favourite filament manufacturer, located in Poland. I have long time ago stopped using filament from companies which do not appear to have an own production, as such stuff has not proven to be of consistent quality but appeared sometimes rather to be the cheapest available on the crap market for the stick-my-brand-on-crap distributor.

I try to give answers to the best of my ability, but I am not a 3D printing pro by any means, and anything you do you do at your own risk. BTW: I have no food for…

Those are all good brands listed here, and most of them, or at least a lot of them, can be found on Amazon.  They even have their own brand that I have used and had good results with.

Hatchbox is my go-to brand.  Great luck with their PLA, PETg and ABS.  Unfortunately, since the Covid hit the fan, their availability has been spotty.

Another one I've been very satisfied with is Paramount, which another user here turned me on to.  If you want colors such as Castle Limestone Gray, Orange Cherry Crush or Sky Blue Pink, they will have it.  They may be out of plain old black, white, or gray.  😉  😉

Overture is another brand that I've found to be good and consistent.  RepRappers is another, but again, spotty availability.

I've found Solutech prints well, but they do not use as much pigment as most other brands, so there is an obvious translucency.

A good second source of the silver-gray that comes with the machines is the FilamentPM online store.

All of the above seem to be available at to-the-door prices in the US $20-25 range.

My go-to filament is Polymaker PolyLite PLA: http://3dprinterreviewblog.com/2020/03/12/review-polymaker-polylite-pla/

It pretty cheap and prints well.

Hi, what profile do you use for it? I'm having troubles with stringing.
