PSU Rattle

I have a Printrbot which works flawlessly and does everything I need.. But decided to upgrade to a MK3 when it was announced last year..

But I have a terrible confession to make.. I got my MK3 kit in December planning to build it over Christmas, but I had the worst cold of my life for 2 weeks and wasn't in the mode.. Then I lost interest in after reading about some of the early issues.. I built it (slowly) in January and upgraded a bunch of parts as I did.. But never had the urge to switch it on. I just knew that it would take over my life and I would become obsessed with getting it dialled in.. So I put it off, week after week after week.. I read the forum tirelessly and got disheartened by some of the issues. And I just waited for some change where everyone was suddenly happy where I might give it a go.

A few weeks back one of my colleagues asked for a recommendation and I told him about the Prusa.. Within a week he had ordered, received and built and and showed me some of the prints and I was staggered how good they were.

So last night I decided that I needed to crack on. I double checked my wiring, switched it on and was relieved that it powered up.. I did the self tests and was delighted to find that I had 0.04 skew... Belt tensions of 260 (Glad I fitted the belt tensions now which helped getting them spot on), and 11mm for Y axis from Min.. So it appears I did a decent job during the build.

I now need to get Z dialled in and I can get going

But the first thing I noticed (And it wasn't a surprise) was the annoying rattle from the PSU.. Its just obvious.. I know the cause, but just wonder what people have done to fix it.. My plan is to open it up, and stick the plastic insulator sheet (Which I believe is the root of the issue) to the chassis.. But I just wonder what other solutions people have come up with.

Sorry for the long post where i should have simply asked "what can I do about the PSU rattle".

I look forwards to your thoughts

Jon

Re: PSU Rattle

nope thats about it.

while you're at it check the solder work on the back , lots of bad joints on mine needed to be reflowed and ends that needed to be trimmed down.

Re: PSU Rattle

I had a problem with the PSU noise, Prusa sent me a replacement which wasnt as noisy but still had the same issue, I found that a heatsink resting on a capacitor was the main issue and also all the ferrite beads and also the plastic isolating sheet between the board and the metal casing. I placed a heatsink pad between the heatsink and the cap, used electronics silicone on all the ferrite beads and spray glue to stick down the isolating sheet , it runs quiet as a mouse now.
