Print Bed Options

I have read a lot about printer beds and optional 3rd party add-ons for the MK3.

I found Builttak. Are there any others you have tried and how well do they work?

Can you use a glass plate?

On any printer with a magnetic bed probe (which I believe includes all the Prusa models), you will not be able to use a glass plate. The distance from the top of the glass to the metal underneath is too great for reliable position sensing by the probe.

not familiar with that one, but it seems like it has a pretty limited lifespan of 100 prints. PEI really is very good especially if you take care and clean it properly. There's a reason why its so widely used.

I believe buildtak sells steel sheets that will fit, and the official power-coated steel from prusa (if you can actually get one) are supposed to be very good as well.

Re: Print Bed Options

people have made glass work on the Mk2, by running mesh bed levelling on the normal buildplate, raising the extruder and pausing the print in g code, then fitting the glass, before the Gcode continues with a suitable Z offset... the Mk3 is not a lot different so the same technique should work if you desparately need to try it!

seems fraught with problems... and for what? Yes glass can give a lovely smooth base, but adhesion is much more difficult than with PEI...

I had Glass on my Mk1, I was glad to move on! 🙂

Thanks. Just looking at what is out there. I did not know about the 100 print limit.

Re: Print Bed Options

I too am looking for a glass plate option for my i3 MK3. Yes, for most materials, the PEI sheet is great. My past experience with TPU on a Lulzbot Mini is that TPU sticks perfectly to clean glass. TPU did not work well with PEI, it stuck too well and was incredibly difficult to remove. In fact, TPU sticks so well to a PEI sheet, the PEI can be damaged when removing a TPU print. I was able to resolve this by using a glue stick to make the TPU stick less aggressively to the PEI. But, again, the easier and better solution I found was to print directly to clean glass.

Re: Print Bed Options

Here is how I remove TPU prints from PEI. Once the print is cooled I spray some isopropyl alcohol onto the bed around the part making sure that the edges of the part are wet with alcohol. I wait 10-20 seconds for the alcohol to start wicking under the part. I then start SLOWLY peeling up the edge of the object with a spatula, allowing the alcohol to continue to seep under the part. Continue peeling until the part comes off. Add additional alcohol if necessary to keep the edges of the part that are still stuck to the bed wet.

I read this technique on these forums several months ago and it has worked great for me every time. I don't use glue stick or tape. Just a clean build plate with PEI.
