Re: Powder Coated PEI Sheets: NOW SHIPPING
Hey guys! first time poster and new to the FDM world, coming over from an SLA form 1+. I just got word my MK3 is shipping but wasn't able to wait for the powder coated sheet. Found this and ordered one but wanted to get your opinions as to what you thought if you've tried it or not.
Great community here! Stoked to start printing and creating! Thank you!

I tested one of these and have about 15-20 prints on one.
I would say: If you can’t wait, order one. If not, just wait for the one from Prusa.

Re: Powder Coated PEI Sheets: NOW SHIPPING
I bought one of those powder coated sheets on ebay. It isn't bad but I do have some gripes about it. As stated above the powder coated isn't as thick. I haven't been able to achieve the same textured look as the parts that came with my MK3. I have also noticed that there are high and low spots on the sheet cause the first layer quality to not be so good. I have the same thing with the stock PEI sheet that came with it but not nearly as bad as the knock off powder coated one. The calibration between the 2 are so far off that I can't even easily swap between the 2 sheets. The powder coated sheet is much thinner that the PEI sheet. Due to this I have swapped back to the PEI sheet as my normal use. Been waiting for the Prusa powder coated sheet for months. My guess is that it is going to be months before it is available to be purchased separately as the ones that are coming in are being reserved for new buyers getting the kit with the powder coated sheet.

This is true. It is expecially true with V2 and less so with V3.

Maybe for you but the variance across my V3 sheet is so bad that I only print smaller parts on it.
For me it was a complete waste of money as it's all but unusable.

Sorry to hear that - we obviously received different sheets.

Maybe you got lucky or I'm a little more OC with regard to first layer uniformity as I know I obsess about get my first layer just right for anything I present. Best I can tell I'm not the only one with mediocre flatness on my sheet. In any case I treat is as an expensive learning lesson that I'm not willing to repeat.
Re: Powder Coated PEI Sheets: NOW SHIPPING
I have that after market v3 sheet and the coating is garbage. At least 1/4 of the sheet is raw steel and not PEI. It looks like when they hung and bake it the coating shifted.
Re: Powder Coated PEI Sheets: NOW SHIPPING
Odd, 25-30 prints now. I don’t have that problem.

Re: Powder Coated PEI Sheets: NOW SHIPPING
The coating fully covers my sheet but I have to assume the surface is not uniform as I have high and low areas that show up whenever I do large prints or lots of parts across the bed.

Just got an email that these are on sale from MatterHackers. Is this expensive? I would want to know where it's made though. It's displayed on what looks like a Prusa and sounds like a great product:
LayerLock Powder Coated PEI Build Plates
LayerLock Powder Coated PEI Build Plate is the reliable, durable PEI build surface you need for your print bed's magnetic base. This sturdy steel sheet is powder coated with PEI, making it resistant to scratches and requiring no careful installation of adhesives. Just add it onto your magnetic base system, accurately calibrate your z-height, and now you have a build surface ready to provide strong bed adhesion for thousands of prints. Thanks to the flexibility of the plate, you can simply pop off a print without resorting to spatulas, scrapers, or knives, furthering its longevity. Invest in LayerLock Powder Coated PEI Build Plate once and you'll have a quality build surface to help you achieve quality prints for a lifetime. This build surface is compatible with standard filaments such as PLA, ABS, PETG, and flexibles such as TPU and TPE.

It's a competitor, but certainly not the Prusa original. Some folks have reported that it seems to be identical to TheKiinngg (or however it's spelled) off eBay/Amazon. For the price, I'm not sure if you gain much by paying more from MH with free shipping, or from Prusa with their shipping. Personally, I've got a Prusa original and am happy enough with it, and their warranty is solid.
MH sells their Pulse printer which is based on an open-source Prusa design (no shenanigans, it's allowed), but with a variety of enhancements for specialty needs.

Sort of like jumping right on bitcoin when it hit $17,000 or buying Beanie Babies at peak prices. I've got some nice tulip bulbs I should list on eBay.
