MMU Question: Why not increase the infill % if needed for purge to infill?

I'm following the work on the MMU waste object, and think I know of an issue or two, but I wanted to get everyones understanding on using infill for purging.

Why can't the extra waste (blended, discolored) extrusion be used in a higher percentage infill.

Instead of an object with 20% infill, and a waste object with 20% infill, why isn't it possible to have a single print with 70% infill (or whatever percentage is required to use all of the typical prime tower material?)

The only issue I've read that continues to be an issue is the top layers, which this idea does not solve. (However, a calculation and a cube with the absolute least amount of material and a bunch of bridging would cut the material use down considerably.)

I imagine this is tought to program, but beyond the difficulty and the top layer issue, what else is stopping this from being common, or at least being an option instead of having a prime tower / funnily colored waste print.

Thoughts?

You will always have a purge tower or waste print. There's no "instead of". The best you can hope for is to minimize the amount of material in your purge tower.

With that out of the way...If you think adding infill where possible to reduce purge might be a useful feature, you can experiment with this by hand. Just use the part editing in Slic3r to specify a higher infill in places where you want to add more infill to reduce the purge. It will be a pain in the butt to do this by hand, but at least you'll know if the results are useful or not. If it's useful, you can use your experience to convince the developers to work on this feature.
