MK3 with Input Shaping as fast as Bambulabs

I had a couple hours last weekend and I thought to myself "can a mk3 be as fast as a Bambulabs?"

TL;DR: Yes, the Mk3 stock hardware is capable of printing the bambulabs slicer profiles with the same quality.

I spent a couple hours last Saturday setting up klipper and input shaping onto my mk3 with 100% stock hardware, I then copied the fastest stock bambulabs slicer profile and loaded it up onto my mk3 for a benchy. Here's a video showing the results (apologies for the super cringe editing). Obviously it did the benchy in the same time as a bambulabs.

I also ran a speed benchy and did a leisurely 11minutes with decent quality and is comparable to the result off a bambulab. I think it is capable of single digits with poor quality.

Here is the github with the files that you'll need.

At the time of posting, I would classify the release as "Experimental" because the configs it may need some tweaking. As such, I am looking for brave souls to go through the process and let me know what speed bumps you find along the way.

hi, exciting stuff!

minor nitpick: you‘re using additional hardware so stating „100% stock hardware“ is a bit misguiding, isn‘t it? 🙂

so you get where i‘m coming from: i stumbled upon this thread because i just learned marlin supports input shaping now and was looking for info about if it may (already or ever) be possible with our good old mk3* models.

Wow. I am very interested in this. Especially after getting to like Klipper on my Flsun V400. Would love to bring the Prusas into the same software world.

I'm abandoning Prusa if they don't drop an experimental update with input shaper. It's been too long with no real jump on advancement. Please Please Please rush this before you lose your base.

Wow!

That’s impressive. The editing is pretty good too. It only took couple hours for the upgrade?

Thanks for sharing.

To get the performance, what kind of profile changes did you make in PrusaSlicer? Or, what Slicer are you using?

This post made parts of me rigid.

I ordered the MK4 the moment I saw the release video... part of me wishes I had waited for the upgrade kit to come out, but now... now it might still be worth hanging on the the mk3 and see how much life this kind of work would breathe into it!... but also... maybe the mini might be a damn good printer to try klipper on too? I've even wondered about turning the mini into a coreXY... shit might be cash money

Could you share your printer.cfg, other config files and slicer settings? I want to try them on my klipperized MK3S😉

No joke. At this point it’s just disrespectful to your base. Input shaper is an old hat now. We all expect it pronto.

Yh, makes sense.

I'm hopeful Prusa gives us an update on this feature - it's about time

Well, now it is here!!

I just hope they will give us this on the MK3S+ also. Bought mine a few weeks before the MK4 was announced because that was the BEST out there I thought. But, after some weeks things got different 🙂 so please give us this, no rush

RE: MK3 with Input Shaping as fast as Bambulabs

Highly unlikely that input shaping will come to the MK3S. In current form, the people running input shaping on MK3S are doing so using Klipper and a separate computer (usually a RPi) to control directly. The 8-bit Rambo board of the MK3S is not powerful enough to run at the necessary speeds for input shaping.

The MK3.5 upgrade replaces the Rambo board with the 32-bit xBuddy board, which has already been running input shaping on the MK4, and should support input shaping on the 3.5 configuration eventually.

That is the upgrade path necessary for official input shaping support. It does look like they will continue to develop/support the MK3S firmware (as evidenced by the massive updates with thermal models and MMU functionality), but it's just not powerful enough to make the leap that far.

Ok, yes, probably :/

Well I have a Pi with OctoPrint already, that was a great upgrade. Will see what upgrades could be done in the next stage 🙂

This is awesome! Can you please describe your setup in more detail? For example, where/how did you mount the accelerometer? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I never had a 3D printer with input shaping.

As soon as I saw this I installed Klipper on my MK3s+. Your guide was very helpful and installation was very easy. However, I accidentally mistuned input shaping THREE TIMES until I found your config with input shaping settings 😂. Thank you for posting all the important files of Klipper. You just saved me hours.

RE: MK3 with Input Shaping as fast as Bambulabs

You don’t need an accelerometer to tune input shaping. Klipper allows you to use an accelerometer to (mostly) auto-tune, but you can also tune it manually, although it takes a lot longer. He also put his config on the GitHub at https://github.com/Fail-Fast-V0/klipper-prusa-mk3s/blob/main/config/printer.cfg . So unless you have any large modifications to your print head or print bed that would change their mass and therefore their resonant frequency, you should be able to use his values as a good starting point.

Here’s the input shaper settings in his printer.cfg

[input_shaper]
shaper_freq_x: 50 #(max recomended is 8.5k)
shaper_freq_y: 57 #(recomended is 9.6k)
shaper_type_x: mzv
shaper_type_y: mzv

Every thing is ordered… my single mod is a hotend switch to e3d revo… since the upgrade 3.5 still not available… this will be my way foward with this printer
