MK3 Kit build result with pictures

Hi guys,

Didn't see a better place for this post, I thought I remembered a "hall of fame" or something similar, feel free to move it if it doesn't belong here.

Anyway, last tuesday I received a package from UPS that I had been waiting for.
Wednesday is my day off, so excelllent timing 😉
Next couple of days my wife and I built our second Prusa printer, our previous one being a Mk2 (also kit build).

Yesterday evening our first print came out of the printer, everything working as expected or even better 🙂
Throughout the assembly process we made pictures, you can view them here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/WUzj2hHbAreYjRsRA

There were several things throughout the build that made me say "I see they improved on this vs the MK2", so good job on those.
It's nice to see the Prusa team constantly improving, not only on their fully assembled printers, but also the way their kits are built including the manual.
Kudos to the Prusa team, keep up the good work!

Only a few things we struggled a bit with:
- Getting the X-axis smooth rods into the printed parts required more force than I would have liked. I ended up very carefully hammering on them with a cork plate in between to get them all the way in.
- One of the heatbed spacers was too small on the inside, the screw would get trapped and could not be forced through by turning it. Managed to get it in spec by forcing a screw through with two pliers a few times.

Other than that, I'm thrilled with the new features such as the removable build surface, the trinamic stepper drivers with all their fancy features, and the sound - it's soooo quiet, awesome. The new frame is also a lot nicer, feels a lot more robust and also is a lot less fiddly to assembly correctly.

All in all, we're very happy with the new printer so far.

Thanks for reading!

Wouter.

Excellent photography! Thanks for the effort putting this all together. It should be of some help to new kit builders, for sure.. 😀 😀 😀

Very nice work! Looks like you made it into a fun family project. Just a couple of questions:

  • I didn't notice the Haribo Gummi Bears in any of the pictures. Are you sure you've built it properly?

  • Is the substitution of whisky meant to replace the Gummi Bears, or in addition to?
  • Nice pics, and good job. On a serious note: The E3D "pro" silicon socks (with the small opening) have been associated with some bad filament malfunctions. Search around here on the forums for more details. The "normal" with the larger openings seem to be less of a problem.

Thanks for the kind words guys 🙂

    @bobstro:
    1. The bears are certainly there, in one of the earlier pictures you can see the first still full bag, later empty bag lying on the table.
    2. However, they were clearly not specced for more than one person assembling the printer. They were gone the first night :-p
So yeah, the whisky could be seen as a substitute 😉

Thanks for the headsup on the sock. As I mentioned in the fotoalbum I've been running my MK2 for a year now with the sock, no issues there. I'll probably get a new version of the sock though now that I know of this problem.

Today I printed the lower layer height treefrog, can you tell which one is which?

    Really nice review! 😀

Did you try to print something bigger than the frog?

I'm still somewhat new to 3D printing and not having used any of the socks yet, I'm curious what it is really supposed to achieve. Can you fill me in on some specifics?

    Thanks,
    Trinity

keep the temps abit more even, and keep the nozzle cleaner.
