Lowest stable layer height

Hi. 

I've just bought a d-brand case and skin for my phone.

The skin is good but I want to make my own.... I'm thinking a multi layered design - kind of like those layered mandala designs.

I'll be painting these layers.

I have very little thickness to work with.  Probably a max of 1mm thick overall.

I've never done a layer height lower than 0.1mm

I did a test with a base of 0.04mm - that was a mistake 😀 

I then did a base of 0.08.  Can I go lower than this?  Do I need to tune my settings to get lower?

I use simplify3d and can sent screenshots of my settings.

As I'm tying this I'm thinking....... I hold the phone a certain way and always have my forefinger in a certain place..... Can I make an moveable design... moving my finger up and down for example will move something on the design.  

I like to torture myself

 

I have a 0.4 nozzle.

With a 0.4 mm nozzle you're not going to see any appreciable difference with layer heights less than 0.1 mm (at least for my eyes).

Stick with a first layer at 0.2mm to ensure adhesion.  That leaves you 0.8mm to divide up your decorating layers.  A 0.4mm nozzle is not going to work well below 0.1mm layer height ... so a max of 6 to play with.

Print in place mechanisms are very dependant on print orientation and usually have to be free of external constraints.  The thinnest regular moving parts I've printed are about 2.5mm thick allowing 3 layers of bottom support, skipping two layers of void then 3 layers of moving part, two more of void and three layers of cover.

This is the only one I have to hand - because it didn't make the grade but you can see the effect.

The following post comes with a realisation (at the end) only after doing the below...

I'm now thinking of doing a map of my country.

As you can see from this video I'm testing 1 section.  I've split it into 4 layers (0.25mm each)

I'm using a 0.4mm nozzle and as you can see the print quality just isn't there.

Changing the tool size to 0.1mm nozzle gives it a lot more quality.

I also played with the layer height in the video but am not sure how low a 0.1mm nozzle can go.

I'm also not sure what other considerations need to be taken into account when I do get a 0.1mm nozzle........

AS I'M TYPING THIS...... I'm looking into 0.1mm nozzles and something told my head they were more of a common thing.  

I can only really find a place called Kaika in Japan that sell 0.1mm for Prusa's.  1x 0.1mm = £36

Using nozzle sizes other than 0.4mm is something I've wanted to try for ages but never got around to it.  

The Prusa shop seems to go down to 0.25.

The place I buy my filament goes down to 0.2mm (name says MK2 but assume it'd be fine for MK3).

Well, the only way to know for sure is to start experimenting…

Since E3D makes a 0.15mm nozzle, that seems like a logical place to start. Inexpensive and available.

Just be aware that with a 0.1mm nozzle at 0.05mm layer height the part you used to print in a morning will now take a week or more.
