i3 MK3S kit purchase do i need anything else?

im just about ready to order my first 3d printer and looks like the i3-MK3s suits me good.

on the limited research ive done, im curious to know if i need anything more aside from the kit. must have add-ons?

ive read about textured beds, nozzles, etc.

just making sure i get what i need before ordering. does Prusa have thanksgiving deals by tradition?

thanks in advance

The kit comes with everything you need to start printing, including a 1kg spool of PLA.

I got my kit with both sheets (smooth and textured) But ordering both and shipping to the US could get expensive.

Prusa has this warning in the shop:

Warning for US customers: If you select the combination with both steel sheets, your order will exceed $800 (with shipping) and you may be charged with customs duties.

Some have problems printing PLA on the textured sheet. And I myself find it easier to use the smooth sheet for PLA.

The textured sheet works perfect for me with PETG.

Yeah i just ordered this and a plethora of filiment to include the smooth and textured sheets $1300+. Probably wont see my printer till after the new year. But the printer does seem to come with everything you need. One upgrade I am already looking at is the multiple filament. And if I were you, look at building this case; seems legit: https://blog.prusaprinters.org/mmu2s-printer-enclosure_30215/        I ordered everything I need to complete the case so all i need now is the printer to print the rest of the parts.

Thanks. Also read about greasing the bearings(?) Before assembly. I think its called Super lube(?) Looks like it uses a special noozle. Where do i get these? Again my thanks.

Yes, grease bearing before assembling. Dismantling printer to grease is a pain.

If you are using Superlube in tube then https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1128781 , if you are using the grease gun tubes, use a syringe and use the other cap designed for luer locks.

If you don't have a spare printer to print it, go to prusaprinter, click the world link and look for people near you with a printer who can make it for you.

Sound like you'll be all ready to go when it arrives 👍

If you've ordered the kit rather than pre-built printer and if you haven't got a precision ratchet driver with hex bits I'd recommend getting a small set. Its much easier and faster than the supplied Allen keys and I think I only used one of the Allen keys in a couple of places.

I can't remember the hex key sizes but I've got this cheap one with assorted bits (Hex 1.5, 2 and 2.5) and it did the majority of the job nicely.

I bought some extra nozzles, a thermistor, and a heater cartridge, and a few extra fans.  They will break when you least expect it.

@bapski

Hi Bapski, the parts are not proprietory, but it is important to get the correct items.

the Mk3 ad Mk3S use 24 volt 40watt heaters,
Semitec 100Kohm Thermistor cartridges for the hot end, (I suggest you get two of these because the wires are fragile and these thermistors end up in the middle of any blob of doom...)
Semitec 100Kohm thermistor  bead for the heatbed

and nozzles must be intended for the E3Dv6 hot end   (others have different screw thread lengths which will cause problems later
Brass nozzles are fine for standard filaments,   Abrasive filaments like Carbon fibre and luminescent filament are likely to need hardened nozzles.
NozzleX has a good reputation, there are also hardened steel, Tugsten carbide, titanium and ohlsson ruby nozzles.
it is a good idea to equip yourself with a socket spanner for the nozzles (usually 7mm hex) and some way of holding the heater block still   maybe an adjustable wrench.
Note, SOME nozzles only have two flats on a round body, these are more difficult to handle...  specialist spanners do exist, usually sold by the same suppliers as the nozzles.  Specialist torque wrenches exist for tightening the nozzles...    please note,  the torque required to tighten a nozzle is quite small, and it is easy to snap the brass nozzle body by over tightening.  I use a tiny spanner like this
it is a wheel nut spanner for 1/10 scale model cars and costs about £2.75 .   the beauty of this spanner is that it fits easily in the prusa frame, the 7mm socket will keep hold of the HOT Nozzle when you are removing the nozzle, saving you from burning your fingers or damaging any heat sensitive surfaces, and it will help you ensure that the new nozzle is going into the screw thread, in line with the thread. and it is impossible to overtighten with normal finger strength!

E3D have a number of Resellers around the world...    https://e3d-online.com/pages/resellers
E3D also supply Prusa Specific parts    https://e3d-online.com/search?q=Prusa+Specific

these include thermistors and heaters WITHOUT the quick connect plug and socket, that interferes with the Prusa X carriage...
It's worth considering whether you wish to  try and manage the quick connect, or not. I do not use it...

the Prusa Specific Heatbreak is the subject of much discussion, some folk insist that it causes clogs in the extruder body. you may wish to get a standard stainless steel spare, or a titanium spare, or a Bimetalic spare.   All have their followers and naysayers....

whatever you do. I suggest that you start off leaving the Prusa Supplied heatbreak in situation for the initial build and testing.  Prusa find it very difficult to support people who have changed the specification of the printer from standard.

I understand that Printed Solid, stock many spares for the Prusa printers in the USA.

regards Joan

@baklin "Warning for US customers: If you select the combination with both steel sheets, your order will exceed $800 (with shipping) and you may be charged with customs duties."

is this just a luck thing (you either get charged or not) or its a given that you get hit with 10% VAT. im trying to get my bases covered by getting the textured sheets as well but the added 10% VAT is not economically viable for me.

also, is the textured sheet only available through Prusa (proprietary) or can i order any other textured sheet?

thank you.

Both Printed Solid and Filastruder sell original parts in the US.

Hi Bapski,

the tax seems to be a bit of a lottery...
some folk get hit, others seem to escape without it.

you could consider buying the printer with the more expensive textured print bed (Same bundle price) and sourcing the sommth build plate locally

I suspect Printed solid may have stock, also other vendors are reputed to  hold stock.

I bought a build plate from the Energetic store, on Ali Express, and it is currently the one on My Mk3S, it has two different sides, Smooth PEI on one side and textured PEI on the other

or textured both sides
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000303090504.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.3efd5dc2raHGDo&algo_pvid=36405945-6ecf-4311-a49e-8c95391815ee&algo_expid=36405945-6ecf-4311-a49e-8c95391815ee-3&btsid=2100bdd516062330294974600e1026&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_

another company sells    'The KKiiing' I have not tried these. but some users give them good reports

Triangle Labs and Fysetc also supply textured build plates.

Isn’t that the truth.  Even in the United States, people get taxed a tariff over $800.  I am not sure why some are taxed and others are not even with the same order.  I personally have never been taxed even on 800 and above.

tool changing generally means the ability to change tools in cnc terms, this could mean multiple hot ends, or perhaps a multi purpose machine (ie: 2x 3d printed hotends, laser engraver and cnc spindle) depending on the number of available slots for tools to site idle.
