Hey, where's my fancy wound filament?
When I ordered my Mk3S it cam with a spool of grey, perfect in its winds, like glory to behold.
Today I got this direct from Prusa, did their winder break or something?

That doesn't look like a Prusament spool. Did you order Prusament or another brand?

I am guessing 'basic' means they are just bringing it in from a third party. I hope not, I can get cheap filament off amazon and not pay a tenner delivery on top.

I got a box of that with my new printer and it came with a roll of Prusament as well. To be honest I have opened the generic filament box yet. Curious. Might have to open it and take a look.

Before Prusa started manufacturing Prusament in-house, they sold Prusa-labeled filament produced locally (to them) from Plasty Mladec. They still carry some of it. It's very good filament but is typical of the filament spooling at the time. I believe Prusa still ships a 1Kg spool of the Plast Mldadec filament with the Mk3. The Prusament produced in-house has the tight winding.

I'm sure its all perfectly above board, but it looks at least on the surface like any other filament you can get at a lower price on amazon. I guess I am grumpy because I expected to receive what was in the box with the printer. I was willing to spend a few extra quid on that basis, alas its not the same stuff.
Also the picture on line shows a perfectly wound filament spool.

If there's an actual problem with the spool, contact support. Yours does look a bit looser than others I've received from Prusa, but about on par with what many companies ship in the $25-30 range. If you're after the tidy spooling, be sure to order the "Prusament" labeled stuff.

Everybody tells me that the silver-gray which ships with the printers is a Prusa branded filament, made by a third party, but not Prusament (tm) filament.
The filament is very good and I consider it the benchmark as to what should print properly with the I3.
If you're stateside or UK, a good second source for this is Filament PM. In the States, they do not mention the Prusa name, but state made in the Czech Republic. On the UK FPM site, they do drop the Prusa name, or at least they did a few months ago.

Filament-PM is a subsidiary of Plasty Mladec. Just to be clear, they sell the same filament that is labeled as "Prusa" (manufactured by Plasty Mladec) but NOT "Prusament" (manufactured in-house by Prusa) on the Prusa online store. Unfortunately, shipping a $25 of PLA runs $17.33 in the US. Ordering directly from Plasty Mladec used to cost something like $6 for shipping. I have no idea why their shipping rates are so terrible.

Probably amortizing their costs for a US warehouse, in addition to domestic US shipping. Many countries have mutual exchange agreements in place for deliveries - e.g. "you take my parcels for your country and deliver them and I'll do the same for you". Logistics is weird like that and it's why you can order something from China with $3 delivery costs but sending a parcel domestically can cost $10 or more.
And yes - if you look carefully enough at the non-prusament spool, you will find a "PM" marking somewhere that is FilamentPM's logo.
