Help with wood filament.

Good afternoon. I am trying to print for the first time with wood filament but I am having some problems and need your help. I had a new, unopened roll here at home for a couple of years but apparently the bag was not sealed properly and was letting air and moisture in, I put the filament in the oven at 50°C for two hours yesterday and for another two hours today but the stringing is still almost the same.

I am using a Prusa MK3S with a new 0.6mm nozzle and although the filament is generic I have used the two profiles that exist in PrusaSlicer, the ColorFabb woodFill and the other that now I can not remember the name.

The nozzle is new and I did two cold pulls to make sure it wasn't dirty, but it still didn't work. I'm attaching three pictures one of the first print before drying the filament, the second one of the same print after drying it out two times in the oven, and another of today with just the first layer square to see if you can help me understand what's going on and what I can try to change in the settings to see if I can print with this roll instead of throwing it away.

Hope you can help me,

Thanks.

RE:

Some more information, the two profiles that I'm using in PrusaSlicer are the 'ColorFabb woodFill' and the 'Smartfil Wood'. Both uses Extrusion multiplier: 1.1, bed temps 60º, one uses nozzle at 200ºC and the other one at 220ºC, everything is default settings, any question is just ask.

The second problem are the supports that are so tied to the print that I can't remove them, despite having already changed the Top/Bottom contact distance to 0.3 in the print settings but we can leave the supports for later, let's first try to get this filament tweaks right.

As I said before, I bought this printer almost 3 years ago and had zero problems with it so far, this is the first time that I have to tune my filament settings so I'm a bit lost.

Thanks.

It looks like you still have some damp in there, your first layer calibration is a fraction too low.  Try slowing the print a little.

Cheerio,

RE: Help with wood filament.

I'm seeing over extrusion

not sure what else can be deduced here

change the 1.1 to 1, for sure,

Perhaps you are over reacting to the "wood"

can you make a nice print with plain black PLA ?

use the exact same settings, tweek from there.

I’ll try to print something in black PLA with this nozzle and I’ll post it here the results. But with the 0.4 nozzle everything was working great.

So you are saying to print with generic PLA preset right?

Thanks.

RE: Help with wood filament.

I know this is quite stale by now, but I am having the same issues with a roll of extrudr wood filament that I had in my cupboard for 2 years. Even though the packaging seemed to be OK, the filament was full of water. The wood in it is quite hygroscopic and it can bind tons of moisture. 4 hours in the oven are not enough to dry it - far, far from it. I have had it in my filament dryer at 50 C for 36 hours and it was still foaming when extruding, the situation was better, but not fully resolved, at 72 hours. I am still looking for a practical approach to this moisture problem. Maybe I will keep it in a dry box with tons of silica for a month or two, before drying it some more in the dryer.
The amount of water this filament can hold is amazing.

For now I will switch to a new roll and revisit this one in a couple of months.

Any practical ideas or sharing of experience highly appreciated.

Rob
