Happy with MK3 so far

I was feeling a little apprehensive about my MK3 order after reading a lot of rants here on the forum, but after receiving and building my kit I have to say I'm feeling quite pleased with the (admittedly not very many) prints I've done so far. The printer worked perfectly from the moment I first turned it on and the quality is exactly what I hoped for. I printed the standard 20 mm axis cube and there is virtually zero ghosting or ringing, corners are clean and sharp, and dimensional accuracy is quite good. And wow, this thing is quiet! I'm sure I'll eventually discover some quirks but so far I'm very happy.

I'm using the new 3.2.0 firmware and 1.39.2 Slic3r.

Full disclosure: I did actually hit one speed bump - the X axis belt in my kit was only 740 mm long rather than the expected 850 mm. I happened to have a spare GT2 belt on hand from a previous project, though, so it wasn't really a problem. If I had been forced to wait for a replacement I might be feeling a little more grouchy, but as it is, no worries. 🙂

It can't be true 😮 😆

Happy printing 🙂

Re: Happy with MK3 so far

Issues I've come across so far, I've had mine since late March.

  • Bed adhesion - after a little while you'll need to give it a good clean with some acetone to restore bed adhesion

  • Live Z - honestly it took a while to really dial in the correct live Z value - Jeff's 'Life Z' adjustment helps here. It's worth spending some time on it to make sure its good.

  • Filament sensor - So far has been working great, it wasn't turned on by default. It had issues with a transparent red filament (wouldn't detect and triggered a filament runout)
  • Not much I'd like to change at this point. I've got a filament guide in the works (when the hotend is near the top of the printer the filament has a tendency to come off the spool), and maybe a better X/Y belt tensioner (there's a good one on the forums here I think by JLTX). I don't know if its an option already but I'd like to see the ability to set a ceiling on the number of crash detections before it cancels a print and turns off the heaters.

Overall, super happy with mine. I've still got my Anet A8 (converted to AM8) and it's just been gathering dust.

Have you tried using dish soap and water? I haven't tried it myself yet (planning to--my MK3's build plate is noticeably less grippy than it used to be), but I've heard that it tends to get a bit more gunk off of the surface than IPA without slowly degrading the PEI sheet.

Fine steel wool (the stuff that is like grade #000 or #0000) works really well too. I light scrub and then wipe with Isopropyl alcohol or acetone. This works really well to refresh the adhesion. I was very surprised, and it does not affect the surface finish being very fine scuffs.
