Re: getting a 3d printer...

It's likely that you will proudly show your models to other people and they will start asking if you can do this, or that or the other!!

you will be surprised...! As previously mentioned it's an addiction...

I saw a site on Youtube where someone was trying a 3d printed cylinder head, on a lawnmower engine,
ABS lasted about 40 seconds got hot, fowled the plug
PLA lasted about 20 seconds and the Plug melted the threads and blew out!

as you thought, having two printers, I can also have different nozzle sizes on them if needs be!

saves too much Juggling of Hot Nozzles... 🙂

I am considering putting a volcano on one printer! (3rd... likely to be a Mk2/3 hybrid... Mk2 frame with Mk2.5 extruder and einsy/24 volt PSU)
When I get some free time. at the moment I am a bit of an unpaid chauffeur! sharing the grand children over the summer holidays and fundraising for a group I support...

Well, there is one industrial designer friend who most likely would be interested in seeing some things printed. And I would guess some friends could like some objects such as vases, flowerpots or coasters; maybe some small storage solutions, but I don't see much else...

Could be fun to do, but you know in advance it is not going to work... So a bit pointless... Most articles on "useful things you can print" show some nice things as objects, but not really things I'm missing in the first place...

No children or grand-children here... Nieces and nephews live 1500 km away, and locally not many friends have children. Work wise there may be something to it when we organize a conference or so (e.g. to make a custom gadget or name tag), but something like that happens maybe once a year.

Don't get me wrong, I have a list of things I would print immediately, and a second list of things that could be nice to print (depending on how it looks), and a third list of things to try. The main reason for the printer is that they are things that are difficult or impossible to buy. Well, you could have them 3D printed by some printing service, but then I prefer to have my own printer. 🙂 So that is why a second printer really seems overkill for me at this time - and to starting planning getting two printers when I don't even have one is weird. The different shape of build volume of the cheap one I'm considering could have been an argument, but at 18 cm (diameter) x 30 cm (height), there is not much can could do that the mk3 cannot (just 5 cm difference in height). And its lower print quality may make it more likely to end up gathering dust (unless maybe for some objects that have less detail). Your printers all give similar quality. 🙂

You would probably have a textured build plate before me if you ordered now...

And you would have your mk3 well before I get my mmuv2...

Out of curiosity: what do you do with multiple 3d printers?

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

Glad I looked that up--I almost attributed it to Shakespeare! 😳

What do you do with multiple anything?

I can think of all kinds of reasons, but like almost everything else, it's really a personal decision based on your own short & long-term goals and criteria. The MK3 is my short-term goal/plan. Whether my long term plan is ever pursued/realized depends on the outcome of the short term plan.

No one knows--or can say--how you'll take to this venture. God, bad, indifferent. As someone around here once said, "that is all part of life's rich tapestry." 😀

The bigger problem is that he is in agreement with the guy on the other shoulder... 🙂

Very nice description. My short term plan is "get a good 3D printer", main criterion is that it has to print good quality without too much fuss. I started searching, but figured out what I wanted faster than I anticipated and got bitten.

Being abroad makes this planning now longer term than I want it to be. At the same time, this being abroad alone makes it more difficult to pass time and thus gives me time to really start with it. That may justify the cost of a cheaper one "just for the experience and as a way of spending time". I just fear that it may hold me back from buying another 3D printer soon: if the experience is quite bad, maybe it is not for me; if it is quite good, why bother in short term with another one.

The stupid thing is: I have such doubts over something that is not a large sum of money. I mean, if I would join a tennis club, it would cost me the same amount, and the money would also be gone... So in that sense... why not try it and learn? (or is that that little devil on my shoulder talking?)

Actually, it is, but not in the sense you think: she loves the idea of getting a 3D printer. Not sure if she loves getting two though. 😀

She may get tired of sharing it with you. You can have the crappy cheap one, she'll use the Prusa. Sounds like your problem is solved.

Yup. Yessiree, HE"S married! 😆

DUH... TO FIND OUT WHICH! And not as expensively as one that's going to cost 3-4 times as much.

Your tennis club analogy is apt. Why spend big Euros (racket, balls, clothing, other tennis paraphernalia) on an activity you've never tried and don't know if you'll like? Join a club, rent/borrow a cheap racket, and swing away... Then whether you like it or not, the money is well spent, and far less than the full monty... 😀

I'm mainly interested for the outcome of the 3d printing rather than the experience (for now, short term view). What if the experience is bad because of a bad first printer? (low quality output, hassle) On the other hand, it is different if I treat the first one as just a disposable item to learn (but I hate thinking in terms of disposable devices).

As Joan said... I will have to decide... but the longer I wait the less point there is... A shame I did not think of this one year ago. 🙂

Just to add a technical question again: on which colour of PLA are the details most visible? (for testing purposes: easier to be critical if the details are more visible...)
I'm still browsing for the cheap one, and the offers seem to get better and better... 😕

Ah... I will wait... I'd rather get a good start. The cheap printer I was looking at would be hell to position (due to its shape).

It is just 4 more months, during which I will have a holiday and some other things to pass the time. I'll go back to designing the furniture to put it (and meanwhile practice working with Fusion360.

So it may be I may not be on these forums that much while waiting... Thanks! And for sure I'll be back.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the grey that comes with the MK 3. It catches the light better in photos as well.

I know that expression! 😉

Thanks for the filament info.

I went back to the drawing board to design a piece of furniture on which it sits well... I am still worried about the particles released when printing (less with PLA but still there), particularly as it would be in a living space.
