Fire and fume considerations

When I started running long prints (over 12 hours) with my Delta I used my largest fireplace.

those logs are 4 feet long and that is a 12 lb leg of lamb on the 1840 vintage clockwork jack (i cook in it for parties)
I can stand up inside it and I can burn logs over 6 feet long but I only use it perhaps 10 times a year (for parties in mid winter or if we have a power outage...) The delta printer is over a meter tall and I would need to set up a table for the MK3 but it does make for a very fire safe environment.

Iff I am printing ABS or anything smelly I just open the damper and the draught sucks it up the Chimney (house built in 1840) with 6 working fireplaces and 2 wood stoves in the 8 flues of the chimney I had a radio that was left on all night catch fire back in the 1960s any I have never forgotten that even UL approved electric appliances can go wrong and cause a lot of damage .

so if you have a fireplace just remember you can use it as a fume hood when you open the damper and if you go off to have a weekend vacation and want to run a long print when the house is empty they make a dandy location for safe unattended printing

Beautiful FP! Brings back the days ('70s) I worked in NE installing stoves, inserts, etc. 😀

Good idea if one has the requisite FP & clearance (though the heat lo$$ could add up during cold(er) months! 😯 )

Our current FP would probably do, but it's occupied by a (virtually) permanently installed insert, whose volume is too small for a MK3. 🙁

An alternative (depending on one's kitchen) might be a range hood. There should be around (depending on local codes) 30" (76cm) clearance from range top to hood. Placing a stable base (like a granite/stone sink cutout) on top of the range, and the printer on top of that, might work well too. (Just make sure the range isn't needed/in use while this is going on... 😉 ).

Another alternative (if one has a shop equipped with one) is a spray booth. I'm not up on the safety issues there.

DISCLAIMER:
Trying any of these is at one's own risk, and one should check & comply with any local codes/regulations.

That's "MISTER Old Fart" to you!
